For a math major? Berkeley - it's arguably the best math program in the country (competing with Princeton primarily). If I wanted to do math in California outside of Berkeley UCLA isn't the second choice - UCSD has a better program. I considered moving out to california for my graduate degree in math, but felt the cost of living is too high.

i went to neither school, so what i can offer is purely anecdotal. i know about 10 people who went to berkeley and a lot of them did not like it. there were a variety of reasons ranging from lousy norcal weather to ethnic self-segregation. that being said, i think i would personally prefer Berkeley b/c i don't think there's a real big difference between the two schools, and you might as well go to the place w/the bigger name.

berkeley is a better school, berkeley is a better town to live in, SF is just a BART ride away, berkeley has better air quality. seems like an easy choice to me.

Berkeley -- better education overall. It's not all that bad up there. I've seen both UCLA and UCB; while UCLA generally is nicer (with a massive # of asians everywhere you go), UCB education can't be beat.

Of course, I might be biased because I go to USC. I know a bunch of people that went to UCLA and UCB...so far none of them have said anything really negative about each place.

<---- Goes to Berkeley.

For Math, I'd say either would be fine.

But then again, I have several graduate student friends that are geniuses at math.
So I would say the Berkeley math dept is well staffed.

actually UCLA is in the nicer part of LA - the westside, with bel air literally behind the campus. the air quality is better at UCLA than in downtown. or in the valley where its so freaking hot. or if you go futher inland where its so freaking hot.

besides LA has night life too.

all you people that voted UCB are crazy. i have experiance both and LA simply is a better place. westwood is faaaaaaaar nicer than berkeley, the weather is nicer, and the classes are chill

also, as mentioned earlier the girls are amazingly hot and it's close to the valley. the valley is sooo bomb

You really should visit both before deciding.

I know LA isn't easy, but for the most part Berkeley is very very high stress all the time. Of course, if you're lazy like me it doesn't matter :p

uc berkeley - ranked 20th in the nation, top public school in the nation
UCLA - ranked 25th in the nation, third ranked public school in the nation
UC San Diego - ranked 30th in the nation
UC Davis - ranked 43rd in the nation
UC Irvine - ranked 45th in the nation
UC Santa Barbara - ranked 47th in the nation
UC Riverside and Santa Cruz - in the second tier (second 50 group in the nation)

if you're talking about k-12 education, then that's a different story.

yep, california has the #1 best of public colleges in the nation then the other states. now k-12...erm....not quite

Berkeley is FAR more prestigious than UCLA despite the closeness on the USNews ratings.

I would agree with this ranking for "overall prestigue". But the rankings will change depending on the school (major) in question. For instance, in engineering, from your list I would rank only MIT ahead of berkeley; for business I would rank upenn ahead of the rest, etc.

All I'm thinking about in my rankings are where the leaders of companies and this country attend. Very few come from state schools. Education is what you make of it IMO.

That list sucks, you left out most of the ivys and the mid western schools such as U of Chicago and NW and how could you put Princeton below U of Penn?
