In Kauai. We were driving to the airport to head home and it was on the radio. We thought it was a War of the Worlds type broadcast taken too far for awhile. All planes were grounded before we got the airport.

We called our families and spent about half the day watching the news feeling depressed. Then we went out for ice cream and decided to do anything but watch the news for however long it took to get home.

^^
I had this same thought when I heard it on the radio. That it was a War of the Worlds type broadcast as well.

I was driving on the 101 freeway to drop off my wife at her job and going to mine.

my sister was on vacation at Disney on 9/11... by her accounts, September 12 was the greatest day ever to be at Disney World. all the rides were empty; she and her boyfriend just rode Pirates of the Caribbean back-to-back.

At work, did not have a clue until my boss walked in and told me. Walked over to the breakroom and saw the 2nd plane hit the Tower (live on CNN).

Goodness, it was over 12 years ago. Time goes very fast.

I was walking into work. My supervisor at the time tells me: "A plane hit the world trade tower." I was like "Yeah right, you're joking." He then mentioned something about pentagon getting bombed or hit too. So I'm like: Ok, maybe he isn't joking. So I looked at CNN and it was down. (From all the traffic)... I'm like hmm. Then I hit refresh a few times, and it came up with breaking news (and just a small tidbit, their servers go into high traffic mode where it only shows the top story if its being bogged down) talking about how a 2nd plane just hit the other building.

I was then like. Oh shit...

Needless to say. I was hitting news sites and clicking refresh for the rest of the day.

Lived in California, was still in bed. We had recently moved, didn't have TV setup yet... but boy it sure went up in a hurry after my grandmother called my father that morning. The funny part about translating what other people are saying - is that the first words I heard of it were that NY and DC had been "taken out". Which then got reduced to "hit".

Imaginations and third party interpretations man...

I was in college. First class was at 10AM so I was just rolling out of bed. Heard other guys downstairs talking about some plane crashing into a tower and thought they meant something local to us. Got downstairs a few mins later just in time to see the 2nd hit.

was in school. they didn't exactly explain what happened, but news "leaked" quickly enough. parents panicked and came and took their children home early.

by the time i came home, every channel was showing nothing but coverage (obviously).

I was in Tarnow, Poland!!
I had no clue what was going on......
People were walking up to me and saying -- jest nam przykro!- We are sorry!

Blew me away the Love the people showed for one lone American!!

I was stunned when I found out what happened!! I cried for the dead all day...it was a very moving experience!

Woke up. Maybe showered. Went out to the living room. Both of my parents were glued to the TV. I stood there and looked over a bit to see what they were watching. It seemed pretty dramatic for the morning news. I asked them, "Are you watching a movie...?" They said no. They said it's real.

"Oh..."

Went to school. There was some talk of it in school and viewing of it on TV.

I was in college and working part-time the time. I was living in California then, so I was still sleeping when it hit. My mom called me from work, and the first thing she said was "wake up and turn on the news, we're under attack." I was like "WTF???" Turned on the news and couldn't believe it. I went in and woke up my dad (who worked nights), and he got up to watch. Went into work later and all my boss and I did was talk about it. Then I had an evening class later, and no wanted wanted to pay attention. We spent most of the class talking about it.

The crazy thing was driving to and from work that day. I worked near the San Jose airport, so I was near planes coming and going. It was so odd to not hear anything, and not see any planes moving.

I was unconcious after having peritonitis and appendicitis. I woke up about 3 or 4 in the morning a couple of days later and found a newspaper left for me by my mom and dad. I was all alone until about 8am and I was on that much morphine I couldn't work out if it was a dream or not. I am not ashamed to say I cried when I read what had happened.

Was on the subway when first plane hit. Got to work in midtown (Bertelsmann building). Went to the 44th floor to see (had a perfect view of the towers) and saw the second plane hit, live, not on TV. Called my sons school to make sure all was ok, called my mom in florida to tell her I was ok (I had a 10am meeting that morning in tower 2) went back upstairs to see what was going on, saw the first tower fall, went back to my office, packed my shit real quick and walked to my sons school and picked him up. Waited there a few hours because I live on the lower east side, about 1 mile from the trade center, and didnt want to breath all that shit. Saw that the smoke and debris was heading the other way then walked home. Stayed there about 5 days until the subways were running again. I had a meeting about 2 weeks later that was on wall st. I remember I had to pass within a block of the site and seeing the sides of the building in the wreckage. TV didnt do it justice, the debris was at least 20 stories high and it was still burning. I can never get that view out of my head.

I was driving down the highway when I saw Airforce 1 coming in for a landing at Offutt AFB. Had heard on the radio about the towers, but seeing the president in town kind made things a bit more real.

In an airplane hurtling toward a building.

Seriously though, do we have to do this thread every year? I was getting ready for work, watching it on CNN. Went to work and watched it all day. No work was done on that day.

I was at work.

My dad worked in the towers until that year when he moved to an office on LI. We got a lot of calls from concerned family members who didn't know that he had moved.

Getting ready for work. My parents' anniversary is today though, so they were down in California to go to Disneyland. They ended up still going, but there was hardly anyone else there.

Boston airport apologizes for fire drill on 9/11

Officials at Boston's Logan International Airport are apologizing for holding a fire drill, complete with smoke and flames, on the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The two hijacked jets that were flown into the World Trade Center towers flew out of Logan.

The runway fire drill, announced on the airport's Facebook page, drew harsh condemnation on social media sites.

The Massachusetts Port Authority, the agency that runs the airport, said in a statement that it "apologizes for conducting the fire training exercise and understands that it may have offended many of those touched by the events of Sept. 11."

Several events were held at the airport to mark the anniversary.

"How clueless and insensitive can you be," one woman wrote on the airport's Facebook page.
