Hey, it's almost noon. You should get going or you'll be late to the picnic on the grassy knoll.

Why are you calling him paranoid? He's spot on. They always leave someone from the chain of command out of the building during the SOTU address. It used to be considered an act of paranoia before 9/11 and was joked about. Now, no one makes fun of the practice.

WTF would they leave ashcroft? He wasn't elected. Only elected leaders are part of the line of ascent to the presidency.

Um, I think, just maybe, you should check that out.

I'm man enough to say I'm wrong. Show me the way.

as long as you're confirmed by congress, you fall into presidential succession.

Didn't Tom Clancy write a book about this? Some terrorist crashes a JAL (Japan Airlines) 747 into Capitol Hill during the State of the Union address. The only one left alive is NSA Jack Ryan, who takes over as president.

EDIT: The book was 'Debt of Honor'

That was such an awesome book.

If Ashcroft became president, i'd quit.

Anyone else find it disturbing that by eliminating the top 2 or 3 people in the succession line, someone of the opposite party would become president?

yeah and alec baldwin said he would move if bush became president, but that no-talent ass clown is still around. and so are you. leave

oh and what member of another party would that be

This is just like how the Pres and VP are almost never together just in case something were to happen. If they were both on an airplane and the plane went down, they would both be killed. The same type of situation is happening here, nothing more. I can't believe someone would even think to post something like this.

President pro tempore of the Senate. This office is held by a member of the majority party. Though the majority is now the same party as the president, it most often is not.

Man, I know why they do it. I just wanted to know if it was Ashcroft or not. And since nobody seems to know then I think it's a valid question.

Yeah, but in the book he was confirmed as Vice President just before the crash. And he was Deputy Director of Intelligence for the CIA (not NSA) before that.

Sometimes you just have to accept the fact that not everyone is always gonna attend everything that everyone does. I don't understand why anyone would really care. I find it funny how people seem to concentrate on stuff like that rather than the actual speech. I'm sure that Ashcroft was not the only one that could not attend for some reason.

Dude you misunderstand. If it even was Ashcroft, he wasn't there because he was given an executive order from the President not to be there. Every single State of the Union Address someone is chosen not to be there in case some disaster happened killing everyone in attendance. You know, they'd kinda need someone to run the country if that happened. I just want to know if it was Ashcroft, or if not then who was it?
