Where to get HCl solution?

I need to make a suspension/solution of a drug (ketoconazole) that is not soluble in water, in order to partition the dose (200mg tablet but I only need 20mg dose). I can use HCl + water as a vessel, according to a veterinary drug reference. I only need 20ml or so. Pharmacy...pool supply...hardware...anyone?

Muriatic acid is HCL and is available at just about any hardware/home improvement store for cheap. You can get it at a pool supply place if you like to waste money though.

Yah I was concerned those products might have other shit in it besides HCl and water.

i think this stuff is fairly pure, well more pure than toilet bowl cleaner

...how much solution can you make with 2 gallons of 12 molar HCL for ~$10?

The book says to use 0.8ml water + 0.2ml 1N HCl for each ml of diluent. Is 1N = 1M??

Chemistry (or math for that matter) = if you're not using it, you'll lose it! Been 20 years.

wait, so you're extracting this into HCl to lower the dose? Why not just chop up the pill? I'd be extremely hesitant to acidify a tablet and then try to use the drug, and I'm a chemist.

I have that shit sitting next to my desk.

what do you want? 98%?

you want me to dilute a 20ml aliquot or what?

Edit: (I'm 100% serious, btw...unlike the other drunks in this thread)

Because I need 10mg or 20mg doses. Have you ever tried to divide a tablet into 10 or 20 equal parts? If I just try to mix it in water, each ml won't be consistent in dosage because it won't form a uniform suspension. It will just be particles floating (or sinking) around in the water.

It's not a problem, this was recommended by a veterinary drug reference. Drugs are combined or dissolved in salts and acids all the time, depending on the route of administration, solubility, uptake, absorption, and whatnot. Ketoconazole absorbs better in the presence of an acid or acidic environment.

What you want is reagent grade HCl.

Who knows what's in the hardware store stuff! It's probably worse than technical grade you find at lab supply houses!

I'm a couple hours from the Bay Area and would come get it if I could drive. Thanks for the offer, though. I'll ask a few neighbors if they have muriatic acid. If not, I'll see what the cheapest/smallest container I can get at a hardware or home improvement store. Maybe a local compounding pharmacy could even spare a bit for not much.

98% would be a gas. 37% is pretty standard, as more than that and it fumes quite a bit at room temp.

You're probably thinking sulphuric, where 98% is a pretty standard strength.

I would look up the actual drug. The insoluble stuff in the water is probably the binding agents of the tablet.

We demonstrate this for general chemistry students during a lab with Vitamin C. They need to find out how much is in a tablet, but the tablets never fully dissolve because of the binders, but the Vitamin C in the tablet easily dissolves if the tablet is broken up with a mortar and pestle first.

Edit:
Quick look online suggests that the drug has a low solubility in water (<1mg/ml). If you do need to use acid to dissolve it, I would consider doing a wet-crush of the tablet in a 1-2M solution and then diluting it appropriately to a larger volume.

Apparently, it is also soluble in warm ethanol (~20mg/ml).

Raid a high school chemistry lab? We used that stuff every week to do acid-base neutralization, precipitation, and a bunch of other fun experiments.

High school/ educational supply?

But um... I don't know how "food grade? the stuff made for labs is.
