It's fun to throw 100 gram lumps of sodium and/or potassium in the sea. A throwing apparatus such as a clay pigeon thrower or small trebuchet is recommended though. Too close to your ship and you risk getting sprayed with caustic mist which isn't fun for things on deck and yourself although you're very clean after you lose a layer of skin!

My Dad had to "dispose" of some once. He had 3-5 chunks that were about the size of a potato.Originally posted by: aplefka

Dude, if you're serious, that's awesome! Take pics next time. I've seen a 1g sodium "explosion," but 100g would be freaking crazy.
My Dad had to "dispose" of some once. He had 3-5 chunks that were about the size of a potato.
He tossed them into the creek behind our house. The explosion sounded like a shotgun, then the remaining piece of sodium went flying through the air, landing in the water again and exploding. This was repeated until the sodium was all expended.
It was *very* cool.

Yes and this is one reason why you don't want to toss anything larger than about a mothball sized piece in small pond or cistern. The small pieces will end up on the lawn and wait like tiny flesh eating mines for the unfortunate trekkers donning bare feet. Been there, done that. :Q Consequently your guests look at you with the strangest of stares when you break out the hose and little orange flames start popping like popcorn all over the lawn totally ignoring the well known fact that water is supposed to put out fires, not start them!

Does anyone know where I could (legally) purchase small samples of elements? I'm specifically looking for some of the alkaline metals and maybe a sample of Tungsten. Thanks.
