Where to Buy Samples of Elements

xanis

Does anyone know where I could (legally) purchase small samples of elements? I'm specifically looking for some of the alkaline metals and maybe a sample of Tungsten. Thanks.

you can find Americium (radioactive) in smoke detectors. as for tungsten...i gathered up a bunch of lightbulb filaments. i used to collect elements with the help of my high school chemistry teacher. he would let me order stuff from their catalog which only sold to schools, and then id pay him back. i collected up to 34 elements.

It's fun to throw 100 gram lumps of sodium and/or potassium in the sea. A throwing apparatus such as a clay pigeon thrower or small trebuchet is recommended though. Too close to your ship and you risk getting sprayed with caustic mist which isn't fun for things on deck and yourself although you're very clean after you lose a layer of skin!

Lol, my chemistry teacher did that once! When he was a young student, he and a friend stole a chunk of sodium from his high school. Everybody started freaking out looking for it, and so late one night he chucked it in the quarry.

Dude, if you're serious, that's awesome! Take pics next time. I've seen a 1g sodium "explosion," but 100g would be freaking crazy.

My Dad had to "dispose" of some once. He had 3-5 chunks that were about the size of a potato.

He tossed them into the creek behind our house. The explosion sounded like a shotgun, then the remaining piece of sodium went flying through the air, landing in the water again and exploding. This was repeated until the sodium was all expended.

It was *very* cool.

Yes and this is one reason why you don't want to toss anything larger than about a mothball sized piece in small pond or cistern. The small pieces will end up on the lawn and wait like tiny flesh eating mines for the unfortunate trekkers donning bare feet. Been there, done that. :Q Consequently your guests look at you with the strangest of stares when you break out the hose and little orange flames start popping like popcorn all over the lawn totally ignoring the well known fact that water is supposed to put out fires, not start them!

😱

At one time United Nuclear was selling uranium fuel pellets.
They seem to be out, but do have some other good stuff Here

You could always buy the Heavy Water and feed it to your roommate and then tell him he drank heavy Water, show him the bottle and tell him hes going to die a horrible death within a few days I suppose. Might be good for a laugh, if your a mildly morbid bastard like myself.
