Georgia Baby and Kids - We bought our baby furniture from there. Real nice stuff. The crib will convert to a toddler bed and then into a fullsize bed as the kid grows. This was the furniture set we got along with it...just in a different color.

They've got a pretty good selection but they aren't cheap. We didn't feel bad about it though since the bed converts and the furniture is nice enough to keep for a long time.

Babies 'r' us is great. expensive but nice.

walmart cribs are fine. the baby is not going to be in the crib for 5 years. it will last one child. gratned it will be in crappy shape but what do you expect for $100.

we went cheap with the crib and 1st bed. we did get a good crib mattres ($200) but it fit in the bed we got her. this one (well one like it) it was great but with a baby on the way we need the matress.

So we hare having a bed made. we contacted the local woodworking store and they gave us a few names of people. one guy said he would make it for the cost of wood etc. IF we didnt mind it took a few months.

As for the dresser and chest, I spent two weeks priming and painting two stained oak pieces we already had to match the crib. It turned out really nice. Looks like it came from Pottery Barn :). This whole having a baby thing is really expensive. Wherever you can save money, do it. The damn stroller was like $289 and the infant car seat about $150. We got Peg Pereggo since we read a lot of good things about them. My wife has some baby showers soon. I hope we get lots of stuff or I will drain my bank account.

Same here. The stuff we got is designed to last for many years, and converts. I don't expect to have to buy another bed for the kid for 12 years or so. At $500 for the crib, that's $40 per year. Of course I'll have to buy a new mattress once we convert, but it's still pretty cheap if you look at the life we get out of it.

Our friends bought a cheap crib from BJ's and ended up throwing it out after three years.

Yeah, don't get anything from BJs... hahahaha

anyway... thanks for all the tips guys...
It's my wife's first baby and she wants more... so quality will hopefully last for 2-3 kids...(she hasn't delivered yet so she may change her mind)

thanks all...

our 79$ crib from walmart was solid wood and has seen 2 babies so far.

if you want to spend the money on a crib, then you can do so easily enough at baby USA type of places.

for newborns, bassenettes are great because the baby is snugglier and will sleep better IMO. however, most babies outgrow the bassinette by 4 months or so.

cheers and congrats on the impending stinker.

That's my problem.. Montgomery, Alabama is a puss hole for retail stores... We have a toys r us with a babies r us... but they forgot to buy cribs for the last year... and the burlington coat factory has a baby depot in it with a decent selection of rickety cribs.... then on the East side of town there is a overpriced store that tried to gouge me... for black paint =]

It also has the bonus of being able to take it places with you.

Yeah, a pack and play is awesome. I definitely recommend getting one if you know you're going to be taking the kid over to people's houses, etc. Once you get the hang of it, breaking down and setting up that thing takes maybe a minute tops. :D

my advice is dont waste a bunch of money on stuff the kid is going to scratch on, scribble on, and try to tear up.

you can drop 1000 on nice stuff, but it still looks like sh!t when they draw all over it with crayons, permanent markers, scratch it up, etc.

and they will, no matter how much you try to prevent it.

We found an excellent one from a local family on www.craigslist.org. We paid less than 1/4 of what it was brand new at the furniture store. It's solid oak, so it will definitely last.

To the best of my knowledge, our son's crib is made of oak (but don't quote me on that). It's held up pretty well, but the tops of the crib rails look like they got attacked by termites (read: a toddler who discovered the joy of chewing on things with his new teeth). I know it's a Graco but I don't have much more info beyond that (I'm at work).

Personally, I wouldn't get anything painted or stained unless you're sure it's non-toxic (in the event your kid is a chewer like mine). There shouldn't be any danger of lead these days unless you got an antique crib or something, but better safe than sorry in any case.

they forgot to buy cribs? wow that is just sad. wow how can they forget that?

Those baby depots in other stores always suck. the selection is crap and they never have enough on hand.

I never seen the point of buying a $200+ crib. the baby is only going ot be in it for around 2 years. I would rather save the money and buy a good handmade bed for them.

WE are getting my daughter a handmade bed with a bed under it that pulls out (forget what they are called) for around $400.

With all the military at Maxwell you should be able to get a decent used one. They should have a base newspaper that'll have a classified section, and if they have a base federal credit union they might have a bulletin that includes classifieds as well.

As long as the crib still meets regulations you're fine. You should always get the make/model and do a quick online search to make sure it hasn't been recalled for any crib/pack&play/car seat/stroller/etc.

Anyway, I got a lot of good links from Quesy and snoturtle... as well as others... I should be able to get a really nice one from Atlanta...

If you're going to PCS soon after they're born you might want to just get a Pack N Play with a bassinett feature, they typically use a bassinett for the first few months anyhow. In fact my daughters first time in a crib was down at Maxwell for a 1 week training class the week Katrina hit. I'm hoping y'all are going to have a mild summer this year 'cause I gotta come down there for 6 weeks ASBC in the middle of August and have to run with all the 2 LTs

Consumer's Reports:

CR Quick Recommendations

All of the cribs we tested meet current safety standards. Those with the highest safety scores also did well in our assessments of additional factors, including the sturdiness of hardware and mattress supports and the clarity of assembly instructions.

The pricier cribs we tested often had a fancier wood finish, but we found little correlation between price and performance.

The more-convenient cribs tend to have one or two drop sides that can be raised or lowered with one hand. They're also easy to assemble, and it's easy to adjust mattress height. Cribs judged less convenient may be difficult to assemble; the Delta Luv and Costco models also have drop sides, but they require two hands to operate. Cribs with stationary sides may be convenient only for tall parents.

Well they now have color video baby monitors, so I'm sure it won't be too far until someone realizes how similar it is to a web cam and pronto, dad can watch the baby from work while mom mows the lawn and irons his uniforms ;)

Garage sale, local trader mag or craigslist FTW!

I bought a nice all wood crib with spring mattress support for $60. Thing probably cost a few hundred new and it was in great shape. I still have it even though our son is in a bed now.

Too bad you're so far away or I'd offer it to you.
