Where should I move?

I've decided to move out of Portland. I've lived here 25 years, which is long enough to live in one place. As an aspiring writer/comedian, my top choices are the media centers in this country; New York, NY or Los Angeles, CA. But I'm having a hell of a time choosing between the two.

So I'm taking the vote public! Help me plan my life! My goal is to move in July, whether I've found a job in my preferred city or not. I'll have plenty of money saved up for the move (my grandma passed away recently, and she left me a decent inheritance), but certainly not enough so that cost of living won't be a factor to consider. As I see it there are pros and cons to both places:

New York: I went there a few years ago on vacation and fell in love with the city. It was an amazing place; you couldn't walk 3 blocks without seeing some famous landmark. But I was strictly in Manhattan, and I know if I moved there, I could not afford to live in Manhattan. Are the other boroughs even remotely comparable to Manhattan, or are they the reason New York gets such a bad rap?

Los Angeles: A veritable hellhole of smog stretching on for miles in all directions, Los Angeles seems to be the asshole of the country. However, it has some gorgeous weather, beaches, and lots of opportunities for aspiring writers/comedians/actors to be waiters. I also have lots of family throughout California and the entire west coast, while I don't know a soul on the east coast.

So I leave it to you. Vote for the city you think I should move to. You can always post an alternative, but I'm not giving you poll space, because I don't want to end up in Alaska (I'm not getting married, just moving). Thanks ATOT!

Most big comics have got their start in SF. Mostly because you can tell any joke you want there.

Those are the worst two cities I can think of... One is super-dense-urban, the other is super-sparse-suburbs (not entirely accurate). Still, LA is summer year round. Hope the wildfires hold back.

I voted for L.A., but I meant to vote for NYC. Really though, I'd vote San Francisco. Why anyone lives anywhere other than Northern California is beyond me.

All you folks saying San Francisco; I hear the cost of living there is just about the highest in the country. I've been to San Francisco, and I seem to recall enjoying it, but I was 6 the last time I went, so I don't remember much (I might just be thinking of GTA San Andreas). Are there "cheap" areas of San Francisco, or is it pretty much just really spendy everywhere? And before you say Oakland, doesn't Oakland have a small problem with people getting shot, stabbed, bludgeoned, beaten, shanked, dropkicked and fired out of cannons? Maybe that's just a stereotype...

live right outside of the city, in south san francisco if you can. otherwise, you MUST find a roommate to live in SF.

well, same thing here in LA too... if you want cheaper, you can move out to the valley, and just prepare to be baked to a crisp during the summer.

If you move here, I'll stab you for sounding like a wimp. Everyone should be stabbed at least once a week to build character. And shot every other month. I get stabbed or shot every other day. Makes me a better man.

Now quit your dilly-dallying and make a decision before you become another mjuszak or whatever that "should I move to Boston" guy is.

what kind of stuff do you write? do you want your audience to be new yorkers or angelinos? do you aspire to be woody allenesque or ryan seacrestesque? i say move to chicago and join second city. chicago is a lot cheaper than either la or ny and it's got comedic history.

Anyone who is curious about my material, follow the link in my sig, read a little bit, it will give you a clue as to the type of writer I am. Historically, my influences are more New York than LA, but LA seems to be where most of the comics I really like end up. Go figure.

-EDIT- I haven't voted, and it's a tie vote so far. Don't make me flip a coin... cause I'm flipping it off a cliff, and you don't want me to do that to an ex-President.
