Move to where the work is - not weather, sights, etc. My gut guess would be nyc - then when you make it big you can winter in la.

Might also look at other cities - you obviously aren't going to make your decision on this poll - are you?

If you're just looking for a place to live then neither.

You fail, big time.

You go away anywhere else than here. We don't need your kind. We don't weant you.

In fact, based on frequent personal experience I'm sure France is just your kind of place.

Please emigrate to France.

Like attracts like, and you'll instantly recognize an affinity with millions of your compadres there.

Please emigrate to France.

Such vitirol... You sound far too serious to live in California. Are you from California originally, or are you just stationed there? Are your neighbors frequently stabbing you in the eyes? Are you just pissed because everyone in your state is emigrating to my state, and the only people coming to your state aren't counted in the census? Are you angry because France's currency is worth more than yours? I'm just trying to see where you're coming from...

Where would you recommend as a place to live? I'm torn now; people keep recommending San Francisco, which is cool and all, but the weather there is worse than New York. New York is wonderful if you're a billionaire. LA is great if you can get into show biz. It's a crap shoot...

I haven't decided where I want to go, so this poll is important to me. If there is a clear winner, I'll take that into consideration when planning. At this point, it's virtually tied; NY has a slight edge. That just says to me that either will work.

SF weather worse than NYC? Are you on crack? There's no winter here! And you get fog year round. There's nothing better than fog!

I don't need to hide in the weather to kill people. If I kill you, I kill you to your face.

Compliments. Your vocabulary exceeds that of most on atot.

Are you just pissed because everyone in your state is emigrating to my state [-Atomic Playboy

But they usually come back.

Keep your vibes level, man.

Are you from California originally . . .
Yes of course

Are you angry because . . .
No, wrong, I'm not angry.
But what I previously posted is clearly self-justified as true.

You wouldn't have done that on a clear day!

NY is dirty, expensive, crime-ridden, has bad winters and you can't drive there. But there's a good subway system.

LA is dirty, expensive, crime-ridden, has ugly brown hills and you can't drive there. It also has piles of smog, some of the worst suburban sprawl of any city, and is a total sausage-fest. The people are even worse than New Yorkers. Also, Hollywood is there, which is another strike against it.

I actually like San Francisco, but LA should sink into the ocean.

You're from Daly City. South City And Daly City are totally different worlds from SF. Yes SF has fog, but it's nowhere as bad as South City. I commute once or twice a week to SF to volunteer downtown, and fog has rarely been an issue. However, when I drive people to the airport at night.... ugh.

But seriously. People tell you to go to NY but live in NJ. Well go to LA and live in the OC or something. Same deal.

Let's look at this moving question from a bit of a different perspective, shall we?

What city would you rather fail as a comic/writer and lose all your money and dignity in?

I heard that in LA they literally have tent cities set up now where illegals and people kicked out of their homes due to the real estate bubble bursting live. They even offer adjustable rate mortgages on your tent! In NY they have had tent cities forever. Just look under any bridge or overpass. The biggest difference is how clean the tent cities are. Since the LA ones are relatively new, there is less trash, feces and vomit scattered around in them. And the tents in LA are more likely to have a designer label on them. But the tents in NY are more likely to be covered in colorful bodily fluid cameoflage, which blends in nicely with the clothing of the people living in the tents. It also gets really really cold in NY in the winters in these tent cities. And the people usually are so heavily covered up to keep warm, they look like walking goodwill clothing racks. But in LA you can let it all hang out nearly all year long and you don't need many hip recycled clothes. You can get a great tan and take a daily dip in the ocean to keep your self clean. And the surf board can double as an ironing board or coffee table for entertaining in your tent, too!

Anyone can do bad situational comedy. I was on your website, and I certainly hope this isn't the best you can do. "The Ant Infestation" is just not funny, and for some reason sticks out in my mind like an inflamed fire ant bite. If there are any comedy clubs in your area, I would strongly urge you to find out when they do an open mic night and really bounce some of this stuff off a drunk audience before you decide to make a life changing move from your friends and your home town. Otherwise, you may end up in one of the tent cities referenced above at some point. If you can't make it in your home town as a comedian, chances are you won't make it anywhere else, either.

I appreciate your candor. I'm sorry you didn't like my material. I use the blog as sort of an open mic for humorous essays. Some work, some don't, and it offers people a chance to tell me "Oh that's good," or "that's shit, lose it (the ant infestation bit, for example)." It's basically a sounding board where I can get opinions from a wide variety of people. Some like it, some don't, and I welcome comments such as yours to help keep my perspective, so thank you (honestly).

I do open mic stuff around Portland. Generally, if you're doing stand-up, it's going to be different than essay style comedy. Sure, some story-based stand-up might cross over, but one-liners, impersonations or physical acts don't really transition that well (as essays about humorous parts of language don't necessarily make for great stand-up). I am still a novice; I make no claims to be a professional comedian. My current style of humor doesn't impress you; so be it. You can't entertain them all.

As for the comments about living in a shanty town, well that certainly is a possibility. But it's statements like that that seem designed to keep everyone in their place. If everyone lived in constant fear of failure, no one would ever strive to follow their dreams. I intend to. If I fail, I fail, but at least I won't look back on a life of regret wondering what could have been if I had had the courage to reach out for something better.

I feel like I should add San Francisco to the poll, seeing as how the current tally is like 30-31 (NY is up). Keep those votes coming please!

The tent city bit was intended mostly as a rip on the situational comedy bits you were doing on the blog. I was just trying to point out that with a little effort, most of us can do the same sort of comedy shtick.

I would just hate to see anyone go down in flames in one of those 2 cities with no scratch in their pocket after the fact.

I did not vote in the poll, since I wouldn't live in either of those cities, myself. You could add a poll item as none of the above, heh.

There are actually a lot of other choices to move where stand up comedians can have a chance to perform, as others have said. Even Las Vegas or Toronto is a great city for comedians. Maybe you need to travel around a bit, and do some testing of the waters in different areas and see if your style of humor can carry over in other parts of the country. Learning to fine tune your material regionally may be more valuable to a career than living in one place and doing the same bits to a crowd you know will laugh at it night after night.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck, you will need shit loads of it.

wow. LA and NY neck and neck in the polls. I tipped it in LA's favor. I don't live there, but gotta love the weather.
