In this shocking and incredibly informative take on the Yugoslav Wars, Michael Parenti reveals a conflict that was deliberately designed to serve US and Western European interests. The breakup of Yugoslavia, a relatively socialistic country, saw a rise in poverty, economic destitution, and rampant political violence and corruption within the Republics that broke away from it (barring the violent ethnic wars). While there were legitimate violations of human rights on the side of the Serbs, Parenti reveals that the Croats, Bosnians, and Kosovars were also guilty of human rights violations, and yet those forces never received any reprimands from the US and Western Europe (all under the military “defense” treaty, NATO). On the other hand, NATO and its human rights organizations turned a blind eye on the Croats, Bosnians, and Kosovar forces and over-exaggerated and sometimes made-up the atrocities committed by the Serbian forces.

Even with almost every Yugoslav republic breaking away from itself, the leftovers of Serbia and Montenegro refused to break away nor throw away its socialistic policies. Thus, from the late 1990s, NATO funded a Kosovar extremist group (an Albanian minority group within Serbia), whose leadership is debatably Serb-Albanian (as in, Albanians who had lived their entire life in Serbia) so an insurgency can be waged within Serbia while NATO drums up anti-Serbian propaganda in the international media. This ultimately culminated in the inhumane NATO bombings of Yugoslavia in 1999, where the targets had little (if any) military significance.

He then describes the brutal bombing policy in Yugoslavia and the disinformation campaign at home. Parenti does not try to claim that Serbian violence against Albanians did not occur, but he does show that an organized campaign of genocide such as the one spoken of by NATO officials was extremely unlikely. He shows that the crimes that did occur were more likely to be revenge killings for the KLA violence against Serbs, and also done while searching for such militants.

The writer not only criticizes the American government and corporate media, but also the public stations like NPR or PBS for failing to be critical of the bombing campaign. Even America's left isn't spared.

Finally Parenti compares the American government's policy against a socialist Yugoslavia to its campaign of free market promotion and exploitation which takes place in the rest of the world. He reveals that Yugoslavia was a country that was loathed because it put forth an alternative to this model, showing that a country can be successful with a socialist economy.

Everyone loves to point out that every attempt at socialism has failed. Maybe because the US either destabilizes, invades, installs color revolution or regime change operations in all of them to guarantee failure.

Parenti demolishes the lies and blatant lies and demonization of the Serbs that was started by the Western powers, the media and their puppets in Bosnia and Croatia. As Parenti notes: "What is still not widely understood in the West is that most of the ethnic cleansing throughout the former Yugoslavia was perpetrated not by the Serbs but against them." Even though crimes were committed by all sides, the Serbs managed to take all the blame. Their media propagated reports of Serbian death camps, rape camps and other assorted Nazi inspired crime for which no evidence was later found, not on a scale that they were hyping them. While no such demonization campaign was launched by the West against the criminal regime of Tudjman or Izetbegovic in Croatia and Bosnia, mainly because they went along with the US/NATO plans of partitioning Yugoslavia, while the Milosevic government was opposed to such plans, and that's why Milosevic and his people were targeted.

US/NATO are the main criminals, they illegally bombed Serbia under false pretenses that Serbia was committing horrendous crimes, but it was actually the KLA that was doing so in Kosovo, and KLA is the Western-backed and created terror group. The Serbs were fighting the KLA and reacting to the action of the KLA, not committing genocide against the Kosovar population, and NATO/US and the media took the opportunity to launch a 'humanitarian' intervention under trumped up charges and bomb Yugoslavia to pieces.
