I've actually sat down and read a good chunk of the Koran only to be underwhelmed by it. If you think the Old Testament gets boring during the beginning then you probably will run out of inspiration to finish it, too. Its just not prophetic and historical like what Christians are accustomed to when reading in their Bibles. Perhaps if you are an Easterner in philosophy it makes more sense, because in my Catholicism-oriented opinions the rationalizations were bass ackwards.

The Quran is a very, very complex book that even many Muslims have trouble understanding. That's probably why it's so easy for zealots to use their interpretation of it to further fundamentalism. It may also be why Islam is so misunderstood in the West. If you have strong pro or anti Islamic fealings, I would suggest reading it, with explanations, in its entirety or ask someone who you know is objective yet well informed to explain it to you.

If Allah intended the book to be a guide to living on earth than why would he make it so hard to understand?

Why does it have to be so interperted to make sense? Does Allah have a cruel sense of humor?

Ask him, maybe he'll give you a sign.

Tell me this.

Why did Allah have Mohamed take to his steed at a place that was already revered by the Jews? Couldn't he have foreseen the suffering it would cause? I mean it was a flying horse for pete's sake. He could have taken off anywhere.

I'm not a scholar of Islam, just someone who thinks all sides should be understood as objectively and completely as possible. Maybe it was bacause Jerusalem had such stong importance to all previous monotheistic religions and Islam recognizes all the prophets from the Old Testament including Jesus and Moses. I can't tell you for sure so I don't want to speculate.

There has been speculation that Jerusalem was not the place of the wondrous flight. The specific location is not mentioned in the Koran. The speculation is that later Muslims chose it because of its significance to the Jews.

Thoughts?

I was not aware of the speculation. However, if it were true, I don't think they would choose it because it is significant to Jews as much as it is significant to them as well in terms of the Old Testament.
