Why must people insist upon believing that they "go" somewhere after they die? Is it perhaps fear that what you see is what you get, and that this life is all that there is, and all that there will ever be?

Maybe you're right. But if you believe in multiple dimensions, time travel, and all of those scientific theories (which I do), it'd make sense that the soul might travel to another place after death.

I'd be interested in hearing more what you think of this. I've been reading a couple Michio Kaku books lately and I'm sold on additional dimensions, hyperspace and perhaps even superstring theory but I can't really relate it to thoughts of afterlife I don't think.......

Anyway I believe after you die, you're mentally done. You cease to be. Your body is buried/burned/shot into space, whatever, but you no longer exist. I think thats a difficult thought for people to cope with. People don't want to think it can all be over like that so we try to come up with wonderful sounding fantasies of what might exist. I don't find it that disturbing of a thought though. I figure if I get one chance I'm going to take it for all I can and try to make it worth it.

Calvin: Where do you go when you die?
Hobbes: Pittsburgh.
Calvin: ....Do you mean when you're good or bad?

I don't see how it even matters. If you live a good life and have beliefs of an afterlife, then perhaps that is where you go. As for the physical body (for those that believe that the sould and the body are separate) your body gets either buried or creamated (or entombed in a mausoleum.)

something tells me that there's an afterlife. it's difficult for us to concieve or even care about it because we're all so coddled in our techno-whimsy and our material pursuits but there's too much beauty in this world and there have been too many hints from saintly people to think otherwise.

think of it this way: before we came into this life, where were we? in the womb of the mother, right? and what were we doing in the womb of the mother? developing the components of our physical being. what use were they? they allowed us to come into this world and grow and develop into perfect humans.

so, before the 'afterlife,' where were we? in this world. and what are we doing in this world? some of us do nothing special. some of us do rotten things. but some of us try to develop our spiritual qualities and our spiritual selves. what use is the spirit? it allows us to go into the next world and grow and develop into perfect saintly beings.

now, if we had not developed our physical beings in the womb of the mother, life would have been awfully difficult. imagine going through life with no arms or no legs or no eyes. that, i think, is what it's like in the next world, when we go through life without spiritual qualities.

thoughts?

we are nothing than a rather complicated chemical reaction. when you die your body will be broken down into basic compunds where you will be recyed into something else. such as a flower, emu, plankton, cinder blocks ect. its possible they one day you will become a lump of coal, this lump of coal could be burned to produce electricty, this electricity could be used to run a anti tank mine factory in syria. a busload of american school children could hit this mine and they could all burn to death. president bush the 27th may use this as an excuse to go to war. syria retaliates with weapons of mass destruction. us launches nuke. other arab countries see this as anti-arab behavior, they world is split up into two side, the peacekeepers and the alliance. this war could cause riots and cause new ways of killing people to be invented. this could go on for decades. Congrats by dying you caused the 80 million needless deaths :)

Where do you go when you die?
options are into the ground (most popular, very traditional)
into the ocean (gaining popularity)
into the air (really two options here, if your poor - up in smoke (adding to pollution), if your rich - into outerspace (stimulates economy! bravo!))

Reincarnation hasn't been disapproved or proved. I choose to believe in it... as an atheist, with no particular reason.

If there is no afterlife, how do you explain ghosts?

(I guess it's possible to not believe in either...)

I have always been troubled by the teachings of heaven and hell. I was always the kid in church the priest had to tell to shut up and quit asking questions.. Here is my problem with it..

I think if there is a heaven it would have to be with the ones you love, otherwise how could it be heaven? But unfortunately the people I love, mostly my family, are far from the type of people who would be allowed into heaven.. Infact almost my entire family would probably be in line to take over hell in-case something ever happened to Mr.Satan. lol
I on the other hand have lived my life pretty much in accordance with positive religious beliefs. So I would most positively be separated from all my family. So what should I do? Go on a nice murderous rampage right before I die to ensure I go where my loved ones are?

Please someone who believes in heaven and hell tell me what I should do...
