shoprite for general purpose needs, trader joe's once/week for frozen meals (I buy their frozen fish meals because one of those = lunch + dinner, great for when I'm working 12 hour days at work), and whole foods once/month for meat.

I'm lucky to have some individual markets near me for baker, butcher, seafood, etc. Its a pain to go to the separate places but often worth it in quality. I also like supporting small mom and pop businesses. I stop by the produce market and meat market like 3-4 times a week on my way home so I don't usually hit a supermarket until once a month or so for a bunch of bulk stuff. Usually a Shop Rite or sometimes Target. For instance yesterday I went to a butcher and got 2 dry aged Prime NY strip steaks cut like 2" thick. You can't get that at any supermarket usually. I picked up baby yukon gold potatos, baby arugula, forelle pears, and other stuff at a produce market a few blocks from my house. Again, most stuff that's hard to find in big supermarkets, especially with this level of quality. The produce market is surprisingly cheap too.

Save On Foods for pretty much everything (pretty sure this chain doesn't exist outside of BC). The produce and meats are excellent and the prices on most products are better than Safeway.

Occasionally I get produce at a local shop, Red Apple.

I'm curious as to the frequency people shop. I live in the NYC area and take the subways. Stopping at a produce/grocery store on the way home is easy. When I lived in suburbs and more rural areas, I found I did more bulk shopping. Never did resort to keep a giant meat freezer or anything but I didnt shop more then once a week. Now I shop 3-4 times a week and never have usually more then 3 days worth of food in my place. In fact I mostly shop day by day for what I want to eat that night, minus some extra boxes of pasta, sauces, rice, frozen dumplings, ostrich steak or something.

When the zombies come, I'm gonna be hungry :(

What about you? How many days can you get out of your pantry?

I wish I could shop like you. But yeah, I live in the suburbs and it's exactly like you describe, we bulk up just so that we don't have to make more than a couple/few trips per month. Lots of canned beans and pasta, frozen veggies, etc, etc... Wife and I recently bought a 7Cuft chest freezer and a foodsaver for meats and some other items.

Giant Eagle. It's very convenient, and it's a nice store. I almost never have to wait in line at the checkouts, and the self-scan machines work quite well.

I'm a big fan of Hy Vee. Awesome selection, good hours, good deli(for the midwest). I go to wal-mart quite a bit too as the price is low, they have most stuff, and hours are convenient. When i lived in the south i went to publix which was a nice place but i hated that they closed at 10p. I live in Europe now, and while the open air markets have good quality cheap vegetables, they are incredibly inconvenient. Meat is also outrageously priced here and nothing is open past 8p, so, big FTL in general.

The only time i've ever been impressed at a grocery store was at a super target. I turned the corner to the soup aisle and every can of soup was in perfect alignment. I've never seen that kind of commitment at a grocery store before.

I go 1-2 times a week, at least. I love the shops of more dense urban areas, but few cities, even large ones, really have that.

I'm not a fan of the bulk-up method. I don't buy any food in a can except for rare occasions, so the shelf-life (especially of farmer's market produce) is pretty short.

I too live in a city, and I shop on the way home from work whenever I'm cooking, which is about 3 times a week. Food tastes better when it's fresh.

I try to buy everything from Trader Joe's but you inevitably have to go to a mega mart because TJ's just doesn't have some things.
