/facepalm.
let's not get into this, but they are part of the family that includes racoons and weasels.
they are "technically a panda" just as they are "technically a dog." or "technically a cat."
Apart of the same SUPER family.
That does not make it the same family. Genetics actually place it as an entirely distinct group, but one that shares a lot in common (though almost certainly developed separately) with other families in that super family.
Also - that super family is in the same suborder as the bear family, canine family, etc.
To be clear - it's not in the same family as raccoons and weasels (which themselves aren't even in the same family - two distinct families
😉). It's in the same superfamily. In that super family, there is also the family that contains weasels, otters, and badgers (yes, otters
😛), and the family that contains raccoons and ringtails, and a third family yet that contains the skunks.
It's just as related to the otters as it is the skunk.
😉
It's closer to all those than true bears, but rather distinctive in its own right - enough, genetically, to not place it in a family with any of the above, but rather, in the same group as those families due to shared characteristics.
yes - wiki is my sole source. I don't care.
😀
