People have been talking and comparing these cards like they have been out for 6 months.

SO WHERE ARE THEY?! Every vendor is only taking backorders and hasn't had these cards in stock yet.

And why are vendors on pricewatch charging over $900 for the X800 XT PE?! I can understand if they were the only vendors that had stock but they are also backordering... some serious crack they must be on.

Getting tired of vaporware...

If you have a Fry's near by just drop in a pick up a BFG or Pny. Apparently you can also call and have it shipped.

A couple vendors on pricewatch had ETAs for the ultra of 7/23, but now I see they have changed those dates back to 7/30.

Probably go with the Evga 6800 GT myself.

This is tempting considering PCIe AMD boards and cards won't be out before August and Ultra cards are nowhere to be found:

FX53 S939
Asus A8V or MSI K8N Neo2 Plat.
2 GB Corsair XL
GeForce 6800 GT

Seeing as to how I've behaved and haven't splurged on upgrades lately, what I'll really end up with no matter what is a AMD64 PCIe board and the dual SLI 6800 UEs. I missed out on the Voodoo 2 SLI leetness back then... But alas, it won't be out on time so I'll have to use a stepping stone if I want to play Doom 3 right away.

The Doom 3 benches swayed me, I have to admit. The XT PE was my pick by a slim margin but I've been fighting myself over the equal performance (wins as much as it looses. etc), single slot solutions from some vendors for the 6800 (ie: V9999 Ultra) negate the double slot problem, and more advanced feature set ... Being a programmer, the 6800 has more toys to keep me busy where as the X800 brings nothing new to the table. I've been wanting to play with HDR rendering for a while now. That and you can't ignore SLI if it is indeed more than vaporware. That and some vendors on some pretty good crack highs are backordering the XT PE for $900 + hah.

Dunno, I've been wanting to try out an ATI card since the 9700 and I still have a GeForce 3 ...

Time to make up for lost time. I suppose SLI 6800s will give me the best of both worlds: newest feature set AND fastests performance in both GL and DX.

It woudl rule of NV40 and R420 are just getting widely distributed when they release the fall speed bump, and then those are just getting widely distributed when they release the 5X cores.

Paper launches 4 lyfe.

I've been behaving with hardware upgrades for 3 years... I can already taste the quantum leap in power.

Give me FX55 + PCI Express + SLI 6800 UE NOW!!!!!!!

*drool* *twitch*

PS: paper launch works both ways. They may announce nv50 and X900 3 days after 6800 UE finally arrives in retail, but those will take 2 years to come to retail as well so you still enjoy your 6800 UE while everyone else is 'waiting' for the next vapor card to show up other than BACKORDER for a year...

The competition is so close between nvidia and ati, they forced each other to launch early without having the GPU's ready... I think if one of them had a hefty performance lead, they could still launch later and everyone would buy the cards... but they're so close, they need the 'hype' to build up and get people to pre-order their cards before the other side counters them. In a way, it's okay for consumers, because we're getting better products sooner and cheaper, but by "sooner", it means they paper launch earlier... the cards will come out when they're ready, but marketing deemed it necessary to get the campaign started before they were ready to deliver. :( And because both sides are guilty of this behaviour, it may happen again with the next major release cycle. I mean, they had NV45 pics and info before you could buy an NV40. It's ridiculous, I'm with you on this one, these companies really need to have their production in full swing before they launch new products. That's business for ya.

Oh well, at least its only CPU, RAM, video and mainboard that need to be upgrade every 6-12 months.

My X-15s and Sony F500-R CRT are aging and they are still unmatched!

I don't think we're ever going to see these cards in sufficient quantities to meet current demands, and I think we've already seen the lowest prices, for the following reasons:

[*]Only hardware enthusiasts will pay $400 for a video card
[*]PCI- Express is coming soon
[*]Most hardware enthusiasts will be moving to PCI-Express

It's to the benefit of these companies not to sell very many of the AGP versions at this time.

I don't know what components from these non-PCI Express cards can be used for the PCI Express versions, but I bet these companies are already "re-tooling" for those next gen cards.

Hopefully, my 5900 at ultra speeds will be sufficient for Doom 3. I got it for $212 total 8 months ago which was, and still is, a good deal for a next gen video card upgrade.

Paying $400-$600 is pretty crazy - at least for someone with my income.

Its not vaporware, I've had 2 6800Ultras and 1 6800GT already. I'm pretty sure if I REALLY wanted to I could find a X800XT around somewhere.

My PNY Ultra is in the RMA process while my BFG Ultra has been running in my box for the past 3 weeks.

HDR rendering is not an SM3.0 feature. :p Apparently the 6800 supports direct floating-point blends in the framebuffer (NOT an SM3.0 feature, an NVIDIA-specific one), making it more straightforward -- but you can definitely do it with SM2.0.

That and you can't ignore SLI if it is indeed more than vaporware.

For the moment, it's vaporware. Only PCI-E 6800 cards will be able to be SLI-ed, and only if they have the appropriate connector (although so far they're saying they'll all have it).

Yeah, I was refering to the floating point buffer formats, that to my knowledge, are only supported on GeForce FX and above and on nVidia cards only.

I don't think it's vaporware. I just think that the rollout went way past projected release times, and that now company's are saying "whoa - if we sell 2 million of these guys, no one will have money left to buy the PCI Express versions coming out in 3-4 months".

If the upgrade interval is too short then even hardware addicts like myself are going to have the sense to stop and say "what a minute - I just upgraded - can I really afford to spend $800 a year on video cards?...".

I don't know much about PCI-Express but the boards and the cards are already here, aren't they - at least the 600xt? That's a completely different interface on the card, right? (You have to have a new motherboard to run PCI-Express cards, correct?).

Doesn't this HardOCP Doom 3 benchmarks article showing the PCI-Express card clearly outperforming their AGP counterparts make you a little nervous about upgrading to the AGP version? Am I missing something here, or do the PCI-Express cards significantly outperform the AGP versions?
