I realise that but you're not going to go to the Cinema every night are you? Also... That's what a DVR is for.

See this is where our countries differ and thats why I said you guys are blessed. Prime time TV series dont show every night. If they show lets say CSI here then its 1 episode once a week. You have to wait a whole week for the next episode.

Then what they'd be better off doing is put prime time TV series on on... Thursday or something and then you could see a film on the busy nights at the cinema like Friday or Saturday.

Again though, you aren't planning on going to the cinema every week... Surely?

It's done primarily to give the cast, the crew, the writers, etc time to come up with new storylines... to give them a 'rest' ... your favorite tv show doesn't air for 7 years if they're filming daily or writing new stories daily... you'd use up your resources in a year...

Can't you just write, film the series, for 6 months, then air it for 6 months. Not make and film at the same time. Obviously unless it's a soap. There are crap soaps that have been on for years without these kind of gaps.

Even given all that, I'm still not sure why it's over christmas.

then what do you do for the other 6 months? and which 6 months would you suggest we have good tv? and which 6 months would have bad tv?

Channels only want to screen their shows when the maximum number of people are watching – which allows them to charge advertisers more for the advertisements they put in the middle.

There are other factors, but series tend to start in September/October, and then run until the end of November (Thanksgiving).

They may return for a Christmas special, but otherwise disappear for six weeks – replaced by repeats, until people can be trusted to be back on the sofa.

If you didn't notice... this tends to follow SCHOOL SCHEDULES.

yes .. there's a reason.

parents and kids are HOME... so they watch tv since you're not going out on a school night...

when the kids are on winter break... so are the shows. noone's home to watch.. so why air?

See my previous posts.

I don't get that at all.

I go to the movies if theres something good I wanna see or my wife drag me down there.
But here every channel brags with 1 Prime time show. Normally they show it on satellite then a year after that they show it on the free channels.

So lets say they show CSI then its only CSi once a week till the season finish. When the season is finish they show another hit series but never two or three of them in one week.

But the main point is during the festive season they want the people in the theaters not infront of the TV. It would be silly if production companies compete against themselves by having a tv show and a block buster movie out the same time.

What are all the kids and parents out doing in the cold winter in America at night?

It happens all year round though, summer blockbusters are competing with whatever on TV it's just the nature of the business.

Fewer people are watching TV between Thanksgiving and New Years. It's that simple. Fewer viewers means ad spots are not as valuable. Ad spots pay for our broadcast networks. So there is a mid-season break until people are watching again, usually mid-January or so.

Same with summer. People watch TV when they have nothing better to do. Summer and the Holidays are when people have better things to do.

I guess it's a cultural thing then.

So at 8/9pm in America that's when everyone goes out shopping or playing? 😕

when am i supposted to go shopping? when i'm at work?

i get home at 7pm... eat dinner... then go out to the mall to do some shopping.... or go hang out.

yes. we don't go to bed at 4pm here.

Thats when people are at work and you get the occasional blockbuster thats released here and there with a time space. But just have a look something like 4 or 5 of them are coming out in a space of 2 days.

I guess it's a cultural thing then.

We travel during the Holidays, and we do it again in the summer. Programming is valuable, so originals are not aired when there is a dip in viewers.

If that's cultural, fine, but most of Europe is doing the same thing so it shouldn't sound all that odd. Just to pull one example, Italy shuts down in August and December - no rational advertiser would pay a premium for a spot there and then.

so.. i'm supposed to go christmas shopping for 2 dozen people... wrap them... mail them.... on christmas eve?

🙄

OH!

I've figured it out now, Americans have no time off, unlike over here, my parents have been off since Monday last week, they'll be back after New Years.

Got it now.
