When you started drinking

Remember back to the days you first started going to parties and drinking. Did you and your parents have a talk after the first few times you did this, or was there some kind of mutual understanding that didn't involve any big conversation? Did you avoid the topic and cover it up, or did you just go to them and explain that you drink responsibly? Or was it at college so they dont know anyway?

They knew, they didn't really care. No talk, no coverup, just mutual understanding that I wasn't a total idiot.

No talk about drugs or sex or anything else either.

My parents probably assumed I learned what's right and wrong by the obviously wrong actions of my brother. Yeah, that didn't work.

We had a talk about being responsible and the like, that was all. Over the years I've made a few "mistakes," but live and learn. :)

when I started drinking, I was 15 and in high school. my parents didn't know about it and I did my best to hide it from them.

when I was in college, I didn't really care whether or not they knew that I was drinking and they didn't really care that I did... I didn't really party when I was home from college on break, though. it just seemed really disrespectful to come home at 4 am crashing around the house because I was wasted.

they don't need to know that I was going to high school with a hang over, though ;) since turning 21, I've replaced most of the alcohol that I stole from under their noses. lol. I used to drink all their hard liquor since they never touched it and replaced it with water / iced tea where applicable.

If there was a "talk", I was probably so stoned out of my mind that I missed it.

My parents told me they didn't care if I drank. Just don't drive/be driven home by someone drunk or they would kill me if I didn't do that myself on the way home.

My parents gave a short talk about responsibility, and said that they'd trust my judgement to make my own decisions. The only stipulation was, if I got arrested, they wouldn't bail me out. Hard to argue with that! I will probably give the same speech to my own kids, as it really did make me think about the consequenses of my actions.

My parents asked me not to drink while I was living at home and a minor. I promised I wouldn't and so I didn't untill I left for college. Therefor, there was no talk.

My parents wanted us to start drinking before we got out of the house, so we knew what to expect later on. Looking back, it was probably a good thing.

I'm 17 and started drinking like 2 months ago. After having passed up a lot of chances to drink (i.e. staying in a hotel w/o parental supervision with all my friends for the state hockey tournament), I my parents trusted me quite a bit. Prom was 2 weeks ago and a few days prior to it I just outright told my mom that I would be drinking afterwards, and explained to her that I had been drinking for a few weeks and could handle it.

My mom was OK with it but I know she isn't exactly excited about me drinking. My dad was more understanding and just concerned with me not driving/getting hurt/making babies while drunk. Having said that, I don't think either would be happy with me if they knew how trashed I was last night ;)

Knew, but they're extremely comfortable with the concept of me taking some personal reponsibility so they've never said anything. Same with sex.

i hid it for awhile since i started in 8th grade. around my sophmore year in high school the truth came out and my moms just said to be responsible and that was it.

edit: i was hanging out with an older crowd, so even at a young age im sure she wasnt too naïve to the fact i was drinking.

Yep, i remember the conversation too. He didn't forbade me to drink (i was 16 at the time), he just said that if i was going to drink, i better not drive as well. I've kept my word since then, and have never drove when i drank. I've left my cars in so many bars and club parking lots and just took a cab home or got a drive home. Going back to get my car the next day has always been a pain (most of the time i even got my dad to drive me!).
