iToilet?

and i've left my gps bracket in the window for about 2+ years now. no problems

Crooklyn, NY ... random street parking... brother in-law had his car window smashed because he left the bracket there, they proceeded to take out his GPS from his glove, and obviously found some papers in there with the home address on it because they left the papers on his front doorstep. Go go Crooklyn.

Your car gets 160mi range?
Not to mention gas guages usually drop non-linearly too, with the shallower end of the curve being closer to the E.

Yeah, I usually get about 300 miles on a 12 gallon tank. The trip counter usually reads at least 200 when my gas gauge reads half. Once the gauge reads a quarter tank, it's getting near empty.

I usually just leave my mounting bracket on there since I live in a pretty crime free area, but if I am traveling somewhere and staying in a hotel or something I will usually take it off.

Also, I hardly ever use my GPS for directions, it's more there as a backup in case I need it. The thing I like most about it is the speedometer. The way I have my seat positioned, the steering wheel completely blocks the analog speedometer, fuel gauge, etc... from my view.

It's much easier to look at the digital readout on the GPS unit rather than ducking my head down to see what it says on the car.

I stash the gps in the car and then decide what to do with the bracket depending on the circumstances. If at home, I typically leave it. If I'm out in an area where I suspect higher possibility of crime, I remove it.

They returned his documents at least? Pretty nice of them!

I just have a friction mount for my GPS so it's not a PITA to stow away.

I usually just stick it on my floor board out of sight for easy retrieval.

if it's something you worry about, those beanbag mounting things are absolutely worth it.

if I'm parked somewhere where I'm worried about it (a mall parking lot, random street parking, etc), I'll put the gps in the glove compartment and toss the beanbag thing under the passenger seat.

when I park valet, I'll toss the beanbag under the passenger seat but take the gps with me.

in-dash and prefer it that way. Do you people carry keys, a wallet, a phone, an Ipod-type, and the GPS around? Good god...
I usually know ahead of time when I'll have to carry a lot of crap around and I'll try to compensate by either wearing cargo pants or having a backpack/messenger bag.

you mean.. like... exploring?

wow.. how dare people explore.

how dare people go looking for stuff.

how dare people experience life.

but then again.. what would one expect from someone with 50,000 + posts on an internet forum, and a custom title of "no life"

explore...yea you mean drive around blindly.
rarely do you just have time to just get lost on purpose.
rarely do you find what you need when you need it. tends to be when you want a starbucks suddenly you drive block after block and there are none for some reason.

why use maps at all by your reasoning, getting totally lost should be an orgasmic experience for you:p

but yea i know..you are too manly to ask for directions or use something like a gps. :p

Never remove the unit or the bracket anymore... I did for a while but that lasted all of 2 weeks until I became too lazy. So far no one has bothered... I think GPS unit's are becoming more common place and the shady type people can recognize that the one I have is a piece of crap anyway.

Yes... drive around blindly is exactly what exploring means.

I've lived in my neighborhood for 2 years. I know more sites, more landmarks, more "interesting" places than my neighbor who's been here for 9 years. Why? because on my days off... i drive around. I explore. I look and see what stores, what shops, what sights are in the area.

If you "rarely have time to get lost on purpose" .. you're either a workaholic who never takes vacations... or an idiot.

I usually put away the mount...although I've heard that crooks are getting sneaky and are looking for the "ring" created by the suction cups.

Usually around town, I don't use my GPS. It's more for travelling in unfamiliar parts of town or when I'm in another city. It's invaluable when you get lost, and it's great for figuring out detours if you get stuck in traffic.

Gone are the days of Mapquest printouts and driving and trying to read directions at the same time. :D

Remove the whole thing and stash it away as to not look enticing to passing criminals.

i alter my trips all the time. it's called being adventerous (sp?).

I'm not saying gps is bad, gps sucks, blah blah blah.. i'm saying i dont need it.

if i miss a turn or an off ramp... i... gasp... u-turn.

i tend to drive randomly as well, i like the adventure. especially when on trips with the kids, we always seem to find stuff to explore. BUT, i do have my phone with gps if i need to figure out where the hell we ended up. helped a lot on our trip to san diego.

Ok, it's not so much that I don't know how to get around.... It's more that I know my neighborhood. I know my city. I know cities an hour away better than some others. I can navigate LA which is 6 hours away to get me to certain places and certain friends' apartments even though I've probably only driven around in LA 4-5 times.

I'm good with directions.

But last weekend I went to 2 Sport Authorities before I asked them to call and check inventory and I ended up having to go 20 min away to the further away one. I didn't know that area as well. I had to use the GPS.

Yes I can get to my local Safeway, and like the other 5 Safeways I know, or my local Frys electronics, and the backup one, but what about the backup backup backup one that a friend took me to once 8 years ago? If I'm not paying attention that moment, I might not know where to go. GPS helps.

I tend to know places well that if I go once or twice it's already etched into my head even if it's a city I barely know. However, it's the FIRST time that's tricky.

Or on Black Friday, I know the 3 ways to my mall, but that's front side. What if I exited 1 exit early (which I did)... now how do I get to the mall from the back side? GPS helped.

You think of being stuck in a bubble fucking car and cruising around in circles trying to find your way around as experiencing life? What the fuck. Sorry but, I like to see people, do things I enjoy, and so forth rather than be like, "Fuck, where the hell am I? I need to find a gas station damn-it. Jeez, wish I had a savant memory so I could remember everything I've ever seen on a map ever."

Why does a mounting bracket mean the GPS is somewhere in the car? The people I know w/ a GPS unit take it out of their car and only bring it when they need it.

I take the bracket off, take the GPS with me and wipe the suction cup mark off the inside of the windshield. In big cities like Chicago those smudge marks are an invitation into your car to look for your GPS, happened to 2 friends of mine.

I have a friction mount too. Easy to unmount the GPS, stow in the glove compartment, and throw the mount on the floor out of sight.

Why is anybody arguing with guyver01 about the utility of these things? He's obviously just a shitty troll. Let him enjoy wandering aimlessly.
