When you arrive at your destination with your GPS

Do you remove just the GPS itself and stash it away or do you also remove the mounting bracket? I always figured it made sense to take it all off, although I know some ppl who leave the bracket there. To me it doesn't make sense to leave the mounting bracket there. It tells someone that you have a GPS in the car. Just because it's not in plain sight, doesn't mean it's not there. It's usually in the center box or the glove box. Not too hard for someone to still smash your windows and jack it (or attempt to).

It's in dash.. so you can't remove it. :/ Anyway, if you have a portable one then put it in the trunk box or whatever if you're worried about that shit.

And remove the bracket if possible...

I just use my iPhone. The iPhone bracket lets people know I have an iPhone in my pocket. If they want to steal my MagLite, go ahead. I'll beat you with the other one in the trunk. My trunk is locked and can't be opened by the handle.

its not the loss of the gps, those are cheap. its the idiot ransacking your car and perhaps breaking the window.

always remove the mount, its just bait.

that isn't the point. you can alter your trip as necessary with gps, if you need to find a certain store or food or gas in an area you don't know you can always find the closest one, i don't care how good your memory is, you aren't going to google map that. plus if you miss a turn or offramp etc it will always reguide you back on course. it adds an incredible amount of flexibility compared to a google map print out.

if i miss a turn or an off ramp... i... gasp... u-turn.

I have a permanent mount for my Garmin on my dash. I usually leave the GPS there, but cover it with the dashboard cover or with a hat.

Why even post in this thread then? The OP wasn't even talking to you (no GPS).

yea when you need gas somewhere you aren't familiar with the best bet is just to drive around randomly wasting your time:p
give me a break.

no.. i look at the gas gauge.
when it reads 1/4 tank.. i begin looking for gas stations.
at 1/4 tank, i know i have about 40 or so miles left before i run out of gas.
within 40 miles, i will find a gas station.
and if i dont? i have AAA Plus. They will bring me 5 gallons of gas. Free.
When the AAA driver arrives, i ask him where the nearest gas station is.
Crisis solved.

with gps theres no need for a crisis. theres no need to search for a gas station or a certain store you want. searching for even a 7/11 if in the wrong area can take forever. the idea that you can just wander around just anywhere to find what you want is silly and a massive waste of time. just imagine how long the average person would have to drive around to find say a post office. without gps you are locked into old ways of thinking.

you mean.. like... exploring?

wow.. how dare people explore.

how dare people go looking for stuff.

how dare people experience life.

but then again.. what would one expect from someone with 50,000 + posts on an internet forum, and a custom title of "no life"

i agree... but apparently some people can't find a bathroom to take a piss if their GPS doesn't give them directions to the toilet.

iToilet?

and i've left my gps bracket in the window for about 2+ years now. no problems

Actually, I explore more since I've gotten a GPS.

When I used to live in Maine (moving there after never even visited but once before in which I stayed in the Bangor / Coastal areas) I had a job that required me to do lots of driving and lots of IT work. GPS made sure I didn't get lost and when I had free time I had the LUXURY of adventuring without the worry because I knew I could always get back to wherever I came from, wherever I had to be, wherever home is.

Hell, driving around now I go wherever strikes my fancy and when I'm done for the day I just click the "Home" button.

To answer the thread topic though, I don't use a mounting bracket, I just sit it in the crux next to my emergency brake.

Your car gets 160mi range?
Not to mention gas guages usually drop non-linearly too, with the shallower end of the curve being closer to the E.

I leave the bracket on. Criminals are not going to spend a lot of time rooting around a car looking for a stowed GPS unit. Too many idiots who leave it in plain site. They are easy targets.

in-dash and prefer it that way. Do you people carry keys, a wallet, a phone, an Ipod-type, and the GPS around? Good god...
