I agree with this completely, 90% of the people that badmouth Bethesda for having buggy games are just parroting back something they've heard on the internet. I bought FO3, NV, Oblivion and Morrowind on launch and though I did experience quite a few bugs they were nothing but a minor inconvenience which are present in pretty much every game released.
Well my original post was just some slight humor. On a more serious note, I'm now 30 and I feel like I've wised up a bit. I used to get very hyped for new things, to the point where I'd buy them without demoing or reading any reviews. And certainly I can afford to continue doing that and continue getting burned half the time - however I've come to realize this is a poor plan of action. Maybe part of the issue is Steam and the fact that any time I go to play anything I'm reminded of how immense the backlog of games I actually wanted to enjoy is. But whatever the case, I love the screenshots of Skyrim, I'm psyched they are releasing the game, but I'm also aware that it is the marketing team that is feeding me this info and it is in my best interest to play the backlogged games that I currently have, let the hype die down, let the patches roll out and play a much cheaper and much more polished game. It is literally a win in about 7 different ways for me.
It used to be that only a certain type of gamer had a backlog, however these days, I'm pretty confident to say just about anyone in this thread has a backlog of games they got during various sales. Which means that the minority of people who are sitting around without anything to do is very slim and basically anyone can afford and benefit from waiting for Skyrim to come out and see it's real non-pr state.
I honestly can't recall what bugs Morrowind, Oblivion or Fallout had. I can tell you that I quit Morrowind because its combat was disgustingly broken - my last play was a character called gimpy that I made in the editor that came with the game, he had no arms and no legs and all of his stats were something like -50 or -100. I was curious to see how far I could get, obviously it was more difficult, however I still managed to clear dwemer mines and the such. I wasn't a fan of the self-inflicted difficulty (because it requires you to self-balance it) and so I got bored and quit.
I quit Oblivion when the copy&pasted portals started opening. Once I realized they were all identical, I got a bit disgusted and quit. I managed to play Fallout all the way to the end, while admitting the game was broken, I think the only thing that kept me going were the bobbleheads, I quit Fallout New Vegas when I started crashing every 30 minutes in New Vegas. Oddly enough, NV kept me the most engaged and wanting to continue on, however the crashing was enough to keep me out of the game and into other games I had.
I can't guarantee Skyrim will crash, however I know enough to realize I benefit greatly from staying away from it, even if only to play more SSF4, until it is patched, fully reviewed, weighed and judged. Someone else said they like playing the game now and then playing it again after it has been fixed - I simply believe the time you spend playing it broken is much more enriched by playing another fully functional game.
