When will Putin invade where? If this is about Ukraine, then I read that these photos were from the exercise. And even in order to intimidate this will not be enough, and attacking the emu is not profitable. Elections are coming soon and the whole country is nasty and spoiling your already not very reputation is strange ...

Is that really a thing with Russia? I would guess sooner than later, but given that the Olympics are upon us pretty soon, it's probably a safe bet that it's either after, or possibly during.

Almost starting to wonder, because that's what they did with Crimea lol. Sochi Olympics done "ok we need to invade a country!".

Putin's tactic has nothing to do with invading Ukraine *at all*. His goal is to destroy the image that the EU is potentially a military power. He wants to provoke and he wants EU to not react to show that we do not, in fact, have a structure of leadership capable of organising war outside of being actually attacked in a real proper oldskool war .. which is why he won't attack.

If I was playing Putin in Civilization 6, I would be invading Madagascar as a staging point to conquer Africa. It's not nearly as well defended as Europe is.

Attacking Ukraine seems like sending your troops right into a NATO powered buzzsaw.

US should start invading stuff too. Start with Cuba, then Canada then take Siberia. Once the nukes start flying real estate prices have to drop right?

Trump was going to buy Greenland... what went wrong with that deal? That's going to be prime real estate once the polar ice caps melt.

elect this man president of the EU

My ancestors are the from the Ukraine. Corrupt Russian soldiers murdered all of them except my great grandfather.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

i worked with a couple guys who grew up in ukraine

they were not fans of soviet russia

(or "un-soviet" russia either)

I'm not voting because I don't know. I was talking to a guy I know who spends 95% of his time in Russia, some in former soviet states. He does 100+ shows there a year (riding the Russian rails all over), is leader of a 3 piece a rock band, he's American, his bandmates are Russian. He says he's confident Putin won't invade, that he's doing this for attention or to spruce up his military, whatever. He says his friends all think no invasion is going to happen. Biden said a couple days ago he's confident an invasion will happen in a matter of a few days. Who's right? Dunno.

Piece on NYTimes the other day pontificated that Putin's biggest fear is that Ukraine will join the EU. That would be prickly for him because it would give Russians the idea that their neighbor Ukraine is a better place to be with all the perks, loveliness and freedoms of western culture. The idea being that Ukraine joining the EU is even more concerning to Putin than them joining NATO (which would also concern him, I'm sure).

CBS News NY is now reporting that Russian commanders have been ordered to proceed with invading Ukraine. (2:00 pm EST)

Looks like the folks who picked "after the Olympics" were correct. 😕
