when will apple make the iPad 5?

I was surprised to learn about the ipad 4 just the other day.

Apple is all-in with the Lightning connector, so they accelerated the release cycle and made a new 4th-gen iPad with Lightning and A6X.

Already 5 different devices that use Lightning.

- iPhone 5
- iPod touch 5th generation
- iPod nano
- iPad 4th generation
- iPad mini

I'm glad they're supporting this thing.

i didn't even know there was a 3...didn't the ipad 2 just come out very recently?

iPad 3rd generation was a major upgrade with A5X and a Retina display. It made a big splash as "the best display ever in any device...period."

...and a 4th gen comes out 7 months later.

When you can sell $1 cables for $30 and sell $200 devices for $500-700 to millions, you would be foolish not to accelerate the release cycle.

The standard USB cable is $20, same as it always was. Licensed third-party cables (such as those from Belkin and Griffin) are appearing now. Yeah, the USB cords have a chip now and costs will be slightly more, but Lightning really is an innovative connector and it should have been done years ago.

I've used $200 Android tablets frequently, including Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. I had my HP TouchPad for over a year; most of the time with Android ICS CM9 installed. Every time I used it was a frustrating experience, to say the least. I can't begin to enumerate the problems with the OS and the user interface (not that iOS doesn't have major UI issues, but they are far more tolerable). I rarely used it at all after a couple of months and almost never in the last 6 months. My iPad mini is my first iOS tablet and it's worlds better. I've used it every single day and I hardly even use my desktop computer anymore. Almost all of my web usage just works perfectly on iOS.

I've heard rumors of a device to compete with the Toshiba Excite 13".

It's codename is currently maxiPad.

I disagree. The only major upgrade over the iPad 2 was the screen. The processor was essentially the same, except for double the GPU power to drive the 2048x1536 resolution.

If anything, the 3rd gen iPad was a stop-gap upgrade and the 4th gen brings a major upgrade. It was my advice to people with iPad 2's to hold off and not rush out and buy a 3. I suspect we'll see an iPad 5th gen around September/October. That's because we probably won't see iOS 7 until June and that will give devs enough time to implement new iOS 7 features for a iPad 5 launch.

Wonder what they'll fuck up with ios7 and I wonder what cool apps they'll try to promote that already are on the market from 3rd parties.
