when to pull trigger on ps3

I've been thinking about getting a PS3 but I keep hesitating on when the best time is. I don't see a lot of PS3 games that interest me terribly yet, but I would like it's blu ray and multimedia capabilities. I also never owned a PS2, so there are some great games I missed out on. I assume the 40gb is on its way to the US, but without the BC that obviously doesn't work for me.

Should I:
a) Pick up a 60gb PS3 now (I can get one bundled with Motor Storm at Sam's for $550) and ensure BC in hardware.
b)Wait on the inevitable 80gb price drop.
c)Wait for a possible 60gb model price drop.
d) Wait till Sony makes yet another model in the future.

Choice c won't happen since the price already went down and they're not making any more. Choice d is not a good bet as it's unlikely for Sony to go back to BC on any future models if they do make one.

I would personally get a 60gb from Buy.com so as to snag the $10 GCO discount. If you REALLY want Motorstorm, it's usually a better deal to get it used (unless you just have to have new) as Gamefly has it used for like 50% off the new price. I buy all my PS3 games there and haven't paid more than $30 on any game.

I'm thinking that picking up one of the 60gb models still hanging around. They're still rather common for me to find. I am correct to assume that all 60gb models on the market include the hardware BC?

Thats because the GC finally got cracked after many years after launch. GC was pretty much dead by the time it got cracked. With the Wii being a enhanced GC I'd say the hardware is very similar as is the protection. The PS3 is gonna be like the still hard to mod PS2(minus the HD Loader method).

Eh...not as much interested in things like mod chips. The PS3, while I will game on it, will be primarily a Blu Ray player and multimedia device.

Well buy the 60 gb one if you want the BC. Mod chips work along the whole console line, not usually just one specific model. Plus you can still put Linux on it right now for some different functionality.

The 60GB is no longer being made and is the last model with hardware BC, so buying it while you can makes some sense.

Unless you want the extra 20GB of space for something, the 80GB with software BC doesn't offer anything besides the 20GB and isn't likely to drop below $500.

Hopefully Sony is planning to keep making the 80GB version long-term at $500, because I'd hate to see them drop even software BC. There are dozens of good PS2 games, onyl a few of which will ever be remade for the PS3.

Sadly, I wouldn't be suprised to see them just keep cost-reducing the 40GB long-term instead of bringing down the cost of the 80GB. Typical buyers don't seem to care enough about backwards compatibility to pay for it.

60GB/EE is guaranteed BC? Curious, here.

I too, and wondering when to pull the trigger. There's just not enough games out for the PS3 to push me over the edge. AND I need to finish Halo 3. :D

I still see a few 60gig units around - I may jump on if it's guaranteed. A lot can be said playing thru the classic PS2 RPG's on pennies to the dollar.

Backwards compatibility hardware vs. software is here:
Official Sony BC database (newer firmware updates might not always be in it.)

Neither is 100% perfect even with the hardware BC using the same chips as the PS2 slim, but Sony can (if they want) keep improving both.

Don't waste your money! Spend the money on a 360.

if you already have a 360 put the $'s in a no load index mutual fund:D

you'll think me when you retire:gift:

Thx Dave, that clears the BC up. I'll check that database for the games I may want to play. As for now, though, I'm still on the fence - saving that $500.

LOL, fisheer! You're probably right - but a 360 would be much more fun in the meantime...

...unless you trade gold futures. :D

I did finally buy a 60gb yesterday...I actually have no PS3 games for it yet, and I bought it primarily for HT reasons anyway. I did fire up a couple of old PS1 games--I can't believe how awful they looked. I knew they'd look bad, but some of them (Twisted Metal 2) looked horrendous. Symphony of the Night looked okay. As for the rest of the features, I am very much impressed with it as an addition to my home theater.

^ Be sure to play around with the upscaling options, that may help things out.

Glad to hear that you pulled the trigger. It's a good system with a bad need of some "killer aps." The Blu-Ray option does interest me, but with a 360 HD-DVD player and all the "format war" crap, I'll be remaining on the sidelines for now.

Maybe when Assassin's Creed comes out - we'll see. Need some good tracks to put all that hardware horsepower to use.

I believe you have to enable upscaling, because it's turned off by default. You may also have an old version of firmware that doesn't have it yet.

the xbox360 took about 5-6 months to crack ... that is not "forever" by any means.
