I fucking hate textspeak. Awhile ago, my daughter sent me a text with a textspeak word(forget exactly what), then immediately sent a correction spelled correctly. Made me laugh. I occasionally get one from a client that works construction, and it always startles me. It's kind of expected with a teenage girl, but I expect better from grown men...

I sold some tools on craiglist and the person used 'textspeak' exclusively. When I showed up I was surprised to find a large, balding 45 year old man. I can only assume it was someone from ATOT

It's not the first time a group of people have rappelled from a hole cut in the roof of a Best Buy, so I wasn't too shocked by it. What I struggled over was the designation for what was stolen. "$100G." I read the article and see that they used a G to represent 1000. $100,000 was stolen.

I did an Internet search using the popular online search engine Google and it appears many publications have used G to represent 1000 over the years, not just FoxNews, and it's apparently just to represent "grand" meaning $1000. So why use abbreviated American slang to replace something that's been used for a few millennia by the entire world? Particularly if you're still going to put a $ in front of it - It's like saying "One hundred grand dollars" which is just dumb.

I feel bad for you (and your fellow overly sheltered nerds) that you had to do an internet search to catch up with the rest of us here in the broader society. Oh, the horror that an article should use the commonly known and commonly accepted 'G' instead of 'K.' Your ignorance is showing.

Millennia means exactly what I thought it meant, and was used as intended when I wrote it, but apparently inappropriately. My mistake was both assuming how old the metric system is, as pointed out earlier by Ichinisan, and the misinterpretation of it being derived from the "ancient" Greek word for 1000. I merely combined to two.

It's very odd to me that you feel bad for someone who admits to conducting a bit of research on their own before posting a question on a forum. During that research I found that "$100G" returns far fewer results (237k) than "$100K" does (39 million), and while all of the "k" results are actually regarding money, several of the "g" results are about something else entirely. So the jury is still out on this one, in my opinion, friend.

Actually, the SI prefix K does mean 1000 in computing. While it's rarely used properly, the IEC prefix for 1024 bytes is 1 KiB. Similarly, the IEC prefix for 1024 KiB is 1 MiB. Just like how 4K is improperly used (UHD vs. 4K DCI), no one really cares.

Although, while I can let 4K shenanigans slide, I damn well put my foot down when I see places like Newegg list 2560x1440 monitors under the "2K" category.

Funny thing is that in all books KB has always meant 1024 when talking about bytes or bits.
I used to read a lot and never had seen the liitle i in the middle.
It is only since the HDD manufacturers got creative with advertised HDD sizes (1MB does not equal 1024 * 1024) that everybody started to use KiB and MiB to mark a binary number. Because all the media attention and it was assumed fraud by some customers.
