Mine are made from dinosaur juice!

Pft - mine is made from star dust

I fucking hate textspeak. Awhile ago, my daughter sent me a text with a textspeak word(forget exactly what), then immediately sent a correction spelled correctly. Made me laugh. I occasionally get one from a client that works construction, and it always startles me. It's kind of expected with a teenage girl, but I expect better from grown men...

I sold some tools on craiglist and the person used 'textspeak' exclusively. When I showed up I was surprised to find a large, balding 45 year old man. I can only assume it was someone from ATOT

Not surprising at all, OP. Just look at the average student coming out of the school systems these days. Now reduce that little intelligence by 90% due to social media and reality TV.

Yes, it's slang, but it's not proper grammar. It's fine to say it, colloquially, or just in convo, but it isn't acceptable in a professional sense. This so-called journalist wasn't quoting someone; they just don't know how to English. Probably working their way up to USA Today staff. :D
Oh, the ironing!

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2018/06/20/thieves-steal-100g-apple-products-through-best-buy-roof.html

I stumbled across this article on Facebook and was confused by the headline.
https://www.google.com/search?q=def.....69i57j0l5.6253j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Thieves steal $100G of Apple products through Best Buy roof

It's not the first time a group of people have rappelled from a hole cut in the roof of a Best Buy, so I wasn't too shocked by it. What I struggled over was the designation for what was stolen. "$100G." I read the article and see that they used a G to represent 1000. $100,000 was stolen.

I did an Internet search using the popular online search engine Google and it appears many publications have used G to represent 1000 over the years, not just FoxNews, and it's apparently just to represent "grand" meaning $1000. So why use abbreviated American slang to replace something that's been used for a few millennia by the entire world? Particularly if you're still going to put a $ in front of it - It's like saying "One hundred grand dollars" which is just dumb.
I feel bad for you (and your fellow overly sheltered nerds) that you had to do an internet search to catch up with the rest of us here in the broader society. Oh, the horror that an article should use the commonly known and commonly accepted 'G' instead of 'K.' Your ignorance is showing.

noun
  1. 1.
    informal
    a thousand dollars or pounds.
"he gets thirty-five grand a year"

And here's a pro tip for you, sparky. See the bolded by me sentence that fell out of your maw? The metric system you so proudly tout as the only f*cking way to express that amount of money first came into use in 1799, and is still trying to make headway here amongst our hogsheads and furlongs and such.

Anyway, when you're bleating about someone else's misuse of the language, it might help your credibility if you f*cking well knew what the not exactly esoteric word "millennia" actually meant!

Now get of my lexigraphic lawn! ;) :p

Millennia means exactly what I thought it meant, and was used as intended when I wrote it, but apparently inappropriately. My mistake was both assuming how old the metric system is, as pointed out earlier by Ichinisan, and the misinterpretation of it being derived from the "ancient" Greek word for 1000. I merely combined to two.

It's very odd to me that you feel bad for someone who admits to conducting a bit of research on their own before posting a question on a forum. During that research I found that "$100G" returns far fewer results (237k) than "$100K" does (39 million), and while all of the "k" results are actually regarding money, several of the "g" results are about something else entirely. So the jury is still out on this one, in my opinion, friend.

Zin's comment earlier about "how to English" is a pretty common play on the language. I think it originated from the language used in LOLcats. I'm surprised you haven't heard it before given your cosmic knowledge of everything. I sense a lot of outrage over this. Are you one of the G people?

So . . . you're even more abysmally ignorant than I originally assumed. Good to know!

I do feel bad for you. This is not the reason, though.

You gather your opinions from a compendium of your fellow ignoramuses?

Your honor, I call for a mistrial!

I'm not just "one of the G people." I'm the original OG, and I'm playing around with you like a cat with a trapped and doomed mouse.

Indeed, I'm a leading proponent of G-string theory, which "strippers" down our basic understanding of the universe to strings, or chains . . . possessed by folks like you and yanked by folks like me.

Dance, Leroy, dance! :D

You are a sad, strange little man.

Keep snubbing your userbase, though. I see it's working well for you. Maybe your forum will have no users soon.

Awww, now you've hurt my feelings!

I really, really resent this accusation! I'm not sad at all.

I type this humorous rejoinder in the full knowledge that it will go right over your pointy little head.

He may or may not be a manlet, those in the know have been sworn to secrecy and I can neither confirm nor deny if I am one of said people, but these are not his forums. Just an FYI, by all means carry on with your very well thought out and articulated posts.

Also, all you pinhead shut-ins locked in your ignorant little linguistic ghettos DO need to get out more. Your schools, your cohorts, your parents, your teachers, the entire graphic novel and internet fora infused toilet which YOU think is the goddam Atlantic Ocean of English -- all this and more has failed you, miserably.

I fart in your general direction.

Actually, the SI prefix K does mean 1000 in computing. While it's rarely used properly, the IEC prefix for 1024 bytes is 1 KiB. Similarly, the IEC prefix for 1024 KiB is 1 MiB. Just like how 4K is improperly used (UHD vs. 4K DCI), no one really cares.

Although, while I can let 4K shenanigans slide, I damn well put my foot down when I see places like Newegg list 2560x1440 monitors under the "2K" category.

Funny thing is that in all books KB has always meant 1024 when talking about bytes or bits.
I used to read a lot and never had seen the liitle i in the middle.
It is only since the HDD manufacturers got creative with advertised HDD sizes (1MB does not equal 1024 * 1024) that everybody started to use KiB and MiB to mark a binary number. Because all the media attention and it was assumed fraud by some customers.
