A rash of dead and injured babies was traced back to homeopathic teething pain "medicine".

The remedy used diluted belladonna, aka deadly nightshade. Since there are no standards for homeopathic remedies the "medicine" was not dilluted enough to be chemically inert. Congress forbids the FDA from regulating them so the FDA was not able to pull the stuff from pharmacy shelves.

After investigating reports that more than 400 babies were sickened and 10 died in connection with homeopathic teething products, the Food and Drug Administration confirmed Friday that it had indeed found elevated levels of the toxic substance, belladonna, in the products.

Belladonna, also known as deadly nightshade, was the prime suspect of the investigation from the beginning, which Ars reported about last fall. Nevertheless, the products’ maker, Hyland’s, would not agree to recall the products when it was notified of the FDA’s conclusion, the agency reported.

They did eventually pull the product from the US.

Reality doesn't care about your magical thinking and sometimes it's your child who pays the price.

That is seriously screwed up.

But is about like have the crap you can see sold over the counter just walking into a local convenience store these days that are unregulated.

Trump is busy making it worse at Mar-a-Lago soon I'm sure.

It's amazing how much money we are willing to throw at regulating some drugs while absolutely ignoring others.

Wonder why that is......

Don't worry, if some of the picks floated to head the FDA are approved, we'll see a lot less pesky regulation of drugs too.

One of the proposed nominees, Jim O'Neill, is a fan of allowing any "drug" that passes basic human safety trials to be sold on the market, efficacy be damned.

So, how many babies died because of this "pro life" guy?

Ya, I saw that. All the better to fleece you. But hey at least it won't kill you unlike this crap.

It's pitiful how many people can't deal with reality and how many want to exploit that for a buck.

Could get even worse for you in the US before it gets better

Trump energizes the anti-vaccine movement in Texas

Madness really. I understand Trump has serious psychological issues, but an anti-vaxxer to boot ? Dangerous policy potential when there is a conspiracy nut in the White House. I'd tend to think this is a bridge too far as federal policy though ?! It must be, right ? :D

Maybe just confined to Texas. Politics revolving around fairy tales for a portion of the demographic there is nothing new. Ideally any parent who refuses to vaccinate their child should be visited by child protective services imo, crazy world.

All of my family in Texas has been anti-vaxxer for years, I think it's built into them. Can't have them women folk a-vaccinating 'gainst HPV, lest the Lord strike down their promiscuous lady-bits with lightning and their first born sons with autism.

As a life long Texan I mock those idiot anti-vaccine people. The parents should be fined $5k a day their kids are not vaccinated and if they still refuse then the kids should be removed from that harmful environment.

II hope this is you being sarcastic. Built into them? Seriously, like if they grew up in New England they would also be anti-vaxxer? Sounds more like a notion once common that the earth is flat to me. The South, and I mean no offense, doesn't get called backward for no reason, except, of course, in the South itself.

But then, who knows, you may have a case. You often appear to be half-baked at least.

I have a hard time believing this article. I've used Hylands products personally before many times. My family still uses their stuff everyday due to arthritis pain relief.

Your mileage may vary.. I've had nothing but good thing to say about Hylands and Homeopathy in general.

LOL, homeopathy. Why not just take a big fat sugar pill while you're at it? There is no scientific evidence supporting the notion that homeopathy has any efficacy over some other placebo.

As for this Hyland product, why is it unbelievable? Because you haven't been sickened by it, so it must not be happening? It's well documented that Hyland's product has led to several babies dying and hundreds more being sickened.

You act surprised. Yet there are few bad ideas of the modern era that Trump hasn't subscribed to. The man is a walking font of irrationality. Worse, his presidency is an open assault on the very concept of reason.

You are selling me the koolaid of anti-homeopathy made popular by Big Pharma.

It works. It genuinely works and not just for a few. Probably more people use Homeopathy in this world than those that don't. Its hugely popular in Europe. The Queen of England has an attending Homeopathic physician. Germany is one of the most advanced countries in Homeopathic Medicine.

But we in the US are the retards. Its the same argument why they won't allow prescription drugs to be imported at cheaper cost.. they're made the boogeyman by rich pharmaceuticals. Hell even in Canada its super popular and successful.

Anyways you can believe what big pharma wants you to believe or try and experience things yourself.

Edit: One of my friends has a curved spine and that causes him a lot of pain. He was taking pain meds for decades till he turned to Homeopathy and started massaging an oil. The pain is totally gone. Big difference between painkillers (which are actually pain relievers that they want you to buy again and agian and make big pharma money) and actual pain removers.

Not recreational drugs. Expect the war on recreational drugs to go full throttle.

Oh brother, not this kind of argument again.

You sound exactly like an anti-vaxxer: it's all a conspiracy of "big pharma." You probably are that too.

It's not what "big pharma" wants us to believe. It's what the scientific community says.

Continued homeopathic practice, despite the evidence that it does not work, has been criticized as unethical because it discourages the use of effective treatments,[19] with the World Health Organization warning against using homeopathy to try to treat severe diseases such as HIV and malaria.[20] The continued practice of homeopathy, despite a lack of evidence of efficacy,[6][7][21] has led to it being characterized within the scientific and medical communities as nonsense,[22] quackery,[4][23] and a sham.

Assessments by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, the United Kingdom's House of Commons Science and Technology Committee and the Swiss Federal Health Office have each concluded that homeopathy is ineffective, and recommended against the practice receiving any further funding

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeopathy

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1874503/

Eleven independent systematic reviews were located. Collectively they failed to provide strong evidence in favour of homeopathy. In particular, there was no condition which responds convincingly better to homeopathic treatment than to placebo or other control interventions. Similarly, there was no homeopathic remedy that was demonstrated to yield clinical effects that are convincingly different from placebo. It is concluded that the best clinical evidence for homeopathy available to date does not warrant positive recommendations for its use in clinical practice

Sure.... the doctors/scientists know about these effective drugs and are lying about it. Homeopathic is just another word for "never tested nor explained nor verified by the scientific method". My brother's best friend rejected the science for homeopathy to treat his colon cancer and paid for the mistake with his life...... HIS LIFE. The woman who sold us our last house made the same mistake with her breast cancer and died within six months.... AND DIED WITHIN SIX MONTHS.

Effective medication has a scientific explanation for why it is effective. Homeopathic medication just says it works and have no explanation of how or why.

Bottom line, homeopathy is an effective evolutionary method of removing those with flawed thinking from the gene pool. It is faith healing and it bears a striking resemblance to anti-vaxxers.

I wonder how many of these anti-anti vaxxers in this thread get a flu vaccine every year and are up to date on all their vaccinations like pneumovax, prevnar 13 and other vaccines depending on age and medical history for example Zostavax (shingles vaccine)?
