When is it time to put a pet down?

My wifes wiener dog is around 15 years old, has 3 legs, and just about blind. Sometimes he walks, but a lot of times he drags his single hind leg around behind him.

Then there is the crapping and pissing on the floor. He can not make it to the door to let us know he needs to go outside.

My stress level is going up because of this dog. I honestly feel that my standard of living is going down because the dog is crapping and pissing on the floor. Why should I work so the dog can soil the carpet?

Then there is the whining. The dog whines and whines and whines.

Sometimes I feel that I am going to lose it.

Why don't you take it to a vet if the dog is whining and whining and whining and dragging its back leg? Instead you ask the forum!? WTF is wrong with you? A vet will answer your questions and help you make the humane choice for your pet.

^^^Pretty much this.

I'm against disposing of animals because they become inconvenient. You promised to care for it in exchange for unconditional loyalty. Sometimes that can be a hassle, but breaking a promise is a douchebag move. In this case, it's the wife's dog, but the same principle applies. You got the wife with all her baggage, and one of those bags was a dog.

When the pet has no quality or enjoyment of life.

If you're not sure, take it to the vet and see if there's anything they can do. If they can't, they may suggest putting the dog down.

In my experience, vets won't even suggest this unless it really is the last option.

I always wonder why we don't do this with humans since a lot of times people love their pet more than their spouse.

My wife said she is going to take the dog to the vet.

The Vet will let you know why the dog is whining and provide you with information on his quality of life.

In regards to doing his business in the house, you can always place pee pads around the house for him to do his business on or take him outside on a schedule, so that he doesn't go to the bathroom inside the house.

Who cares about your quality of life. You took the responsibility of taking this pet into your life. Take care of him.

When one of my old dogs needed to be on medications due to her conditions, she needed to go outside every 3-4 hours to pee and didn't have the leg strength to get up and down the stairs, so I would get up a couple of times during the night to carry her up and down the stairs to do her business. She was 85lbs. Part of being a responsible pet owner.

Well, the wrong answer is definitely "because it inconveniences you". That's a downright shitty reason.

Take it to the vet. If it's in pain, suffering, no longer enjoying itself in the usual ways, then you have a decision to make. It's also not right to hold on past that point for your own emotional sake. Fine line really.

How would you feel if you had no teeth, missing a leg, crawling around with your arms, dragging your only leg behind you, which also happened to be weak/bum, pissing and crapping on yourself?

Do you honestly think you would have a very high standard of living?

Wanting to relieve pain and suffering is crappy?

Oh, I know. My post was to try and do some good for his poor dog.

Since the dog has no teeth, my wife and I will cut its food into small pieces.

Just about every morning, the dog gets a pork or turkey sausage patty that has been cut into small pieces.

Please, whatever happens with this dog, don't get another one.

You can count on that.

My wife and I have reached a point in our lives where we do need to worry about a dog.

My dog died in 1988. I have no plans on ever getting another one.

Looking at his pic, if you clipped his friggin nails, it would probably be easier for him to walk. A little human assistance would make him relieving himself an easier event with less trauma to your sensitive emotions.

And how do you know he is in pain or suffering? You don't. The thread is more about you than the poor dog.
