Only if you think 'society' is a monolithic thing and hasn't changed at all as people are born and die. That said - as a whole human society has placed at least some relevance on 'wealth' (of which income can be a common indicator) for a very very long time. The same society that loves, cares, invents as well as represses, hates and demeans.
The amount of effort that you're putting into this backtracking is quite astonishing.

if people were talking about someone making 38k? Most likely not since the discussion would be about someone making 38k and not 19k. If you had not made your statement I would not have replied. If you did make that statement in this new hypothetical situation I likely would have replied with something along these lines:
