When is it ok to ask people how much they make

So true. After making more money, you will find that you can use more money. It's a never ending cycle. For myself, I found that after about $80k my lifestyle didn't substantially change.

I found that after $40k. As long as I kept things reasonable I was good.

Only real thing that has changed is bigger place (not really needed) and a 3rd vehicle. Also not needed.

I did get married since then but she holds her own so no difference... More expenses but we did fine when I was the solo earner around $50-$55k and she was in school.

Only if you think 'society' is a monolithic thing and hasn't changed at all as people are born and die. That said - as a whole human society has placed at least some relevance on 'wealth' (of which income can be a common indicator) for a very very long time. The same society that loves, cares, invents as well as represses, hates and demeans.

The amount of effort that you're putting into this backtracking is quite astonishing.

If the example of a 35 year old earning 19k hadn't been mentioned, and instead it was of a 35-year old earning 38k, are you telling me that your first post in this thread would have been this:

if people were talking about someone making 38k? Most likely not since the discussion would be about someone making 38k and not 19k. If you had not made your statement I would not have replied. If you did make that statement in this new hypothetical situation I likely would have replied with something along these lines:

Uh - they said 38k not 19k
