My brother told me.

I took it well, thought about it and realized it wasn't logical.

I was 6 or 7 IIRC.

I don't really understand the idea of it being "lying" to your kids. There is a 4-6 year period of time between the ages of 4-10 where Christmas is absolutely magical. Kids go to sleep all excited and then wake up and there are toys spread all around under the Christmas tree and they really believe Santa Clause came. When I was old enough to figure out that Santa wasn't real I sure didn't feel like my parents "lied" to me. It's been almost as much fun as a parent keeping this tradition alive with my daughters. My oldest is 8 and this may be her last Christmas of fully buying in to the "magic" of Santa Clause and I will be sad when it's over.
