People from the Midwest a generation or two ago where mostly Blue Collar workers or Farmers and did a lot of physical work that would burn off the extra calories.

When that happens, we'll know just how completely we've f-cked up everything...

HEY! Asthma isnt fun! I mean, sure you can fake an attack, get out of class and have your school call the paramedics, but still.....

-PAB

I didn't mean to attack asthma sufferers, its just merely an example. Instead of living with things, people feel they have to sue for every little thing. Would it be bettter if I said:

"Next, people that are bald are going to sue God (or whoever) because they dont have hair."

Crap! i am going bald and have asthma! i have one heck of a lawsuit against god! i wanna sue!

read in time last week the average calorie/capita had gone from 3100/day in the 60s to 3800+/day in the 90s... that'll do some damage. super-size fries will do that to you.

Yup, that's a midwestern diet. When I'm home from college the first thing I hear from my mother in the morning is "I'm making fried eggs and bacon for you, it'll be ready in a bit.". (Mothers who grew up on a farm are great, they cook well and love feeding people.) Fried chicken, fried pork, and beef are pretty much the staples of my diet. Of course, there's also the "starches" (corn, potatos, etc) and the accompanying copious amounts of butter and whole milk. (On a side note, it's damn hard to get whole milk on campus here, they've got that soy crap for the vegans but nobody gives a sh!t about the people who want whole milk.) And then there's my father's side of the family with all their rich German food, people with heart conditions shouldn't even be in the same room with that stuff.

My parents and grandparents grew up on that stuff. I don't even want to think about what the caloric intake is when a person eats like I do. Despite this though, we're none of us overweight (well, my one grandmother is, but that's just come with age). I'm definitely keeping up the tradition of midwestern diets, but anyone who has seen me can tell you that I'm skinny as a rail. All a person has to do is keep active with something. For me, it's tinkering with my cars and the motorcycle along with general "handyman" duties around my family's house. You don't have to even designate exercise time if you've got hobbies that require action. Work on cars enough and the 60-70lb boxes that you inevitably have shipped to you will build a person up rather quickly.

In addition to Crisco or just plain lard people used to also save bacon grease for use in other recipes as well. I have seen some studies that seem to indicate some correlation between the huge increase in the consumption of "juices" by kids as being one of the reasons obesity is increasing in children. I would think like many others have said here that there are many causes all having to do with our shift from a farming and manufacturing society to a services oriented society where most of our exercise comes from walking from our cars to our offices and back.

"...it's "liberal," nanny state ideology that has led to lawsuits like this. If you tell people long enough that they aren't responsible for their actions and the consequences of said actions, they'll start to believe you." - Amused, 09/19/2002 4:05 PM

Republicans on Capitol Hill are planning to take direct aim at one of the Democratic Party?s biggest benefactors: trial lawyers
  • Lawyers are/and long have been the biggest contributors to political candidates and parties in Washington, and the majority of their money routinely goes to Democrats. So far in the 2002 election cycle, lawyers and law firms have contributed just over $50 million in soft money, PAC and individual contributions, 70 percent to Democrats. While it?s difficult to determine from campaign finance reports which attorneys are specifically trial lawyers, their main lobbying group, the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, has contributed more than $2.3 million to federal candidates and parties so far in 2001-02, 88 percent to Democrats.
GOP Tort Plan Rejected
  • The Republican plan for tort reform to cut down on liability lawsuits has come to Missouri, but rejected by the Democratic-controlled House Judiciary Committee.

But yes, even still, they led far more active lifestyles than we do today.

Yep, I mentioned saving bacon grease in my post. My Mom's egg sandwiches fried in bacon grease were the best damn things I ever ate. :)

My mother was a teacher and my father was an electrical engineer
So I gather from your posts that you think eating greasy fat laden foods won't make you fat.

I don't think weight gain has anything (or very little) to do with the fat content in food.

How much fat do they feed pigs? Hardly any. They get mostly grain and/or corn.

Of course, if you eat anything in excess and fail to burn off the calories, you'll likely gain weight.

They don't want them keeling over from Heart Attacks before they havbe a chance to butcher them. If they feed the Pigs fat laden food they would have sickly livestock.

Fatty Foods= Poison. You take enough of it and it will kill you, whether you get fat or not.

I bet this guy eats a lot of fatty foods..a lot.

I'd say it has more to do with empty carbs, i.e. sugar.

You can be fat and healthy, and vice versa.

I always fry my eggs in butter. When it melts, I sprinkle some salt in, and then put it on low.

Now that I think of it... I haven't had bacon in a long time.

Now Red, that's a very general statement that just isn't true for all people. To get heart disease from fatty foods you have to be genetically predisposed to it. There are plenty of people who can eat sides of bacon every day and never see their cholesterol jump and never clog an artery.

Take my family, for instance. Both my mother's parents lived well into their 90s and died of general organ failure due to old age. They ate the same fatty food I was raised on, and never saw their cholesterol jump to unsafe levels, nor did they ever develop heart disease.

Neither was overweight until their 80s. My mother is 72 and is far from overweight.

And then there is my father's parents. Both died fairly young. One of a stroke, the other of cancer (actually, it was a stroke that came when she was end stage). My father died at 59 from complications after having a tumor removed from his auditory nerve (basically a brain tumor). He grew up in Saracuse, NY and they didn't fry their food nearly as much as they did where my Mom grew up.

And his whole family was overweight by the time they reached their 40s

Anywho, my point is, to universally declare fat 'evil' is not the way to go about this. Fatty diets are bad for those predisposed to heart disease, but fine for those who aren't.

BTW, I believe there was a study done on the Italian and French. The study showed that although their diet was high in fat, their rate of heart disease was a fraction of ours. In the end, they atributted their good health to both genetics, and regularly having wine with their meals. I'm doing this from memory, but I think that's the meat of it.

Agreed, I very rarely indulge in fastfood because most of it I've tried taste like the death it'll bring. I do have some "bad" foods in my diet like mini-muffins, Coke, and rich italian food but I control my intake of them, workout, and take supplements I.E. Omega3, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C. BTW, If the scumbag lawyers had integrity, ethics, and morality then these law suits would never be, so momma don't let your babies grow up to be lawyers.....;)

just make it illegal for companies to use anything other than simple black font on a white box, and always with a clear window so you can see the product.
and maybe force them to put any know side effects/a list of ingredients on the front of the box

just my opinion

In order to discourage unfair competition, I propose that all design of new products be banned. Suppose a company designs a really nice looknig car, and another company designs an ugly car. The company with the attractive looking car obviously has a marketing advantage. For this reason, we should have a single government proscribed "car specification" which any company wishing to manufacture cars must adhere to. The penalty for designing an unauthorized car can be life in prison. Similarly, we will have a governemt issued "hamburger spec", "plastic kitchen knife spec", "CPU Spec", etc. You can see that with this much improved system there will no longer be any srt of unfair competition, and everyone's lives will be enriched.

In other words, I think you're a freaking idiot.

Karl Marx would be proud...

Wasn't this a premise (handicapping gifted people so that everyone's average) for a Vonnegut story? Harrison Bergeron or something like that?
