i try to fill the tank when it gets to 1/4.

someone told me that if you always run your tank dry that you are putting more stress onto the fuel pump. so that it is more likely to fail on you?

Someone was wrong. You are, however, more likely to pick up debris from the bottom of the tank to clog your fuel filter.

Depends. If I am on a trip, then I start looking just under the 1/2 mark. If I am just driving around town, I take it down to below 1/4.

but he has not run out of clean socks, underwear or work clothes, nor had to cook for himself in the same amount of time.

1/2 for me. because if the dead walk the earth and I need hop in my car to drive away, I dont want to worry about running out of gas at the end of the block just as they start closing in :p

What kind of car?
I notice on some cars, the "oh sh!t" light comes on about 5 seconds before the engine dies. 3 seconds if using A/C.

If you fill at 1/4, you're essentially paying for a 1/4 tank that you'll never use...

Gas is liquid. When you pour in more it all mixes together.
And you're not paying for it. The pump stops when the tank reaches full.

if you fill at 1/4 of a tank you will be putting in less gas then when you fill when your tank is empty...
