I'm currently running on 1 hour of sleep. Was in the ER w\ my newborn until almost 5am. Busy as hell all morning with no breaks, and having to work 40 minutes into my normal lunch hour.

So, I come back from lunch and my co-worker is leaving early because of allergies... really?

When do you decide it's time to call in sick?

its much easier for me to work on 1 hour sleep than with my allergies going crazy.

That being said...if I was in your place, I wouldn't have gone in at all.

I don't call in sick. Much too expensive for me.

But your co-worker is smart. If you come in and leave early, you legally can't get dinged for PTO (in CA).

Somewhere between your situation and allergies (unless I'm breaking out in hives or my throat's swelling shut).

Last time I was in the hospital with my daughter all night, I called in and went home and slept until noon.

I call in sick if I can't safely do my job or if I'm likely to spread illness.

I called in sick after the Saints won the superbowl for obvious reasons. I also called in sick when they lost to the seahawks in the playoffs last season :(

I use them when I need them. They are part of my compensation. As long as I don't break the rules, no reason not to use it.

Also, I'd rather people stay home then bring a cold to work.

You're not going to get a medal or a monument built for you because of that, you know. Take the day off.

i was in the same boat when my twins were born. they called me in even tho i had a week off planned for when she delivered, and i was stupid enough to go. i got to see the little guys for an hour before i headed to work.

as it is now, i save all my sick time for when my kids are sick. the only time ive ever called in for myself is if i cant drive, which has only happened twice in 13 years.

I haven't called out due to illness in a very long time. The last time I had to call out was due to a huge blizzard, and I was working retail at the time. And when I say blizzard, that is no exaggeration. Blinding conditions, and snow building up faster than plow trucks could clear it. It was a minimum wage job, but they NEVER closed, and expected us to risk our lives driving into work during storms like that. And since it was a shitty minimum wage job, I didn't have any PTO to use.

For me to call out due to illness, I'd have to be puking or shitting non-stop. I hate using PTO for sick days, so I never do it -- I like using my PTO for vacations. And unpaid days off hurt my paycheck, so I don't do that either.

I used to stay home and not work when I was sick when I was in desktop support. Then I became a sys admin and am able to work from home. It seems the norm for sys admins at my company is to not call in sick when you're sick, but work from home instead. Saves me on PTO time, but I don't like that it seems you need to be on your death bed to actually call in sick.

I generally come in to work around 8:30 (supposed to start at 8) and then let my boss know I have a doctor's appointment at 9:30 so I have to leave at 9 to get there on time. I get back from that appointment by 10:45ish and head off to lunch at 11:30. I get back from lunch around 2:00, asleep at my desk by 2:15. I leave by 4:30 sharp because there is no way I will work 1 second past quitting time. Unless my snoring wakes me up by 3:30 in which case I tell my boss I have to leave early to meet the plumber for an emergency.

The only time I've taken any sick time over the last 7 years was for hernia surgery (and that became short term disability because it was 11 days off).

Shared pool of vacation and sick days is one of the stupidest moves a company can make IMO. Somewhere someone thinks this saves money (and it might actually since you don't have 'sick days' on the books and the books are all that matters) but really it is a productivity hit when people come in that shouldn't and spread their sickness or make mistakes that just cost time.

When I worked with food the managers would have to kick people out that were too sick to work because of shared PTO.

Now I have 'unlimited' sick days but really only work from home when sick. Only once at this job have I actually called in and on that day was pushing ~103 fever and couldn't sit up for long.

I guess I just have a mental line that the sickness needs to cross. A little cough or cold, I go in.

A few weeks ago, I was getting sick, and my roomate was in the only bathroom in the house, so I went to take a piss outside, and I began shivering uncontrollably. Went to sleep early, but I was sweating my ass off in bed, and freezing outside of bed. Called off that day.

I rarely call in when I'm actually sick but I do call in sick (personal day) when I'm feelin' fine.

My time off is a one big collection of hours I can use for whatever. So usually I just email my leads with "I will be out today" and that's it. Sometimes when I'm sick and sometimes when I want to do something else.

I have 400 sick hours saved up so pretty much whenever I want, but obviously with that much accrued, I don't use it much.

When I feel it would not be beneficial that I be there.
There are those days when I so badly wish I was at home or that I hadn't gone in, due to lack of sleep, actual illness, etc.
That's when I call in sick. When I wake up after hardly sleeping, or just plain feel like trash.
