I, uh, hit the snooze without actually hitting the snooze on my alarm clock. It was going to be a short day anyways, so I just called in sick. My first time in 2 years, so blow me...

Its not hard to figure out who is first in line on the chopping block when cutbacks come around.

i call in sick when i am sick and don't want to drive to work
if i am sick and want to work from home, then i let my boss know i am working from home
if i am sick and need to be at work, then i drive into the office anyway
i'm salary, so i get paid anyway and i have 700 hours of sick time, i think it maxes out at 708 or something, so i max every year since i typically use 8-24 sick hrs a year and get a lot more than that

I can work from home, so it's pretty much when I'm so wrecked that I can't do my job or get out of bed.

the last time I called out sick was the day after I had surgery... the surgery itself wasn't that bad, but the anesthesia left me feeling groggy and half-asleep for two days.

I think I've called off sick once? But to be honest, I don't very sick very often, and when I do, it's been mild. I've been very lucky.

Personally, I go to work unless I'm physically unable to get there. That's the bad side about being a supervisor... you get paranoid that your employees are goofing off when you're not there. And from what I can tell when I go I'm vacation, I'm usually right :)

My fiancée, on the other hand, is a teacher who gets about 30 sick days a year. She takes the day off if she has a mild headache or didn't get enough sleep the day before. That must be nice.

its much easier for me to work on 1 hour sleep than with my allergies going crazy.

That being said...if I was in your place, I wouldn't have gone in at all.
Same. When allergies are really bad, it can make me feel helpless if all I do is constantly sneeze and have my eyes watering. It doesn't even give you a chance to think for a minute without sneezing. Thankfully, this is probably 1 or 2 days out of the year and I've learned to use Benadryl as needed to knock out any allergies that a normal medicine couldn't do.

I rarely call in when I'm actually sick but I do call in sick (personal day) when I'm feelin' fine.
Same here. I tend to do this after crazy times at work. I decide I need at least one day off to cool off thus I call in "sick."

Well, if the past three and a half years are any indication, my coroner will have to call in for me when it eventually happens.

I have to be hurting pretty dang bad to call in. While at my last job for 18 months I didn't use any sick or personal time.

There would be reports of bad snowstorm coming in and people would freak out and leave before noon. I'd just be like "meh" and work till whenever in the evening, clean off my car, and drive home. I guess if you were travelling 60+ miles then maybe, but people would take time off due to snow way to easily.

If I ever had stuff to do like appointments, errands, etc I would just come in and make up time later. Even shit like when it took almost 3 hours to get new tires.

So when layoffs came and I was one selected to being laid off, I was pretty pissed cause not only did I do my work at least as good as my peers, but I had never called in sick or used any time. Nice.

I live at my job so I really don't see the point, I can always go lie down if necessary.

I generally come in to work around 8:30 (supposed to start at 8) and then let my boss know I have a doctor's appointment at 9:30 so I have to leave at 9 to get there on time. I get back from that appointment by 10:45ish and head off to lunch at 11:30. I get back from lunch around 2:00, asleep at my desk by 2:15. I leave by 4:30 sharp because there is no way I will work 1 second past quitting time. Unless my snoring wakes me up by 3:30 in which case I tell my boss I have to leave early to meet the plumber for an emergency.

I like your style!

The rule of thumb I usually use is, do I have a fever or am I throwing up? If it's yes to either one then I call in sick. If it's no to both then I'm almost always working.

Any time I'm actually sick, any time I have unburned sick time I may lose, various other times when it's the only way to get off for something I need to do. I do my utmost not to be at any job more than is 100% essential.

Never. Haven't taken a day off sick for 15+ years. You'll be surprised how healthy people can be when their job doesn't include sick pay.

In the past, I would take a sick day twice a year or so if I needed an impromptu day to recharge.

Now, my current job has me working from home ~50% of the time. Haven't needed to "recharge" so I am almost maxed out on PTO.

had a hemmeroid last year, that was a week laying on the floor, cant do that at work

smashed my finger at work, took about 10 hours off then, was allowed to type/use my middle finger, makes it hard to do IT stuff....

other than that, If I have the runs, am puking, or exhausted. I threw away 200+ hour sof sick leave when I left my last job, but since I knew it was coming all summer I used a sick day per pay period to sit at home and play computer

I've been at my current job for three years. I have taken 3 days for ACL surgery, 2 days for horrible allergies, 2 days to watch my kids, and 2 days just because.

In these three years I have never been told how much vacation/sick/PTO we actually get so I just take off as much as I can. I will be taking a sick day next week for an interview. :D

I might call if I was in the hospital. Other than that, I'll go to work unless it's really bad. I don't like staying home and lounging around. Better to push harder to fight whatever ails me.

No sick days in the last 10 years. Just been lucky enough to not be really sick enough I couldn't drag myself in to work. A few colds here or there but nothing major. Took two vacation days for separate surgeries for my knee and a Vasectomy. That was on a Friday and was back at work on Monday each time.
