When do FPS matter?

in america dvd's are at 29.97 fps. everyone who says they don't want minimum fps under 60 is just saying that for bragging rights. They most likely wouldn't be able to see a difference btween 40 and 60.

How different do high FPS really look?
It's not so much how it'll look, but how it'll feel. And you'll feel a world of difference b/w 30 and 60+ fps, IMO. You're in for a treat. 🙂

BTW, even disregarding the fact that film (as opposed to digital) movies are filmed at 24fps, they're often projected at twice that rate to avoid flicker (more noticable in a darkened environment, like a theater).

I'm not even going to bother getting into passive viewing as opposed to active gaming.... nikhilesh, if you're interested, just search for the topic. I remember VIAN spawned a huge thread about this, and there was at least one subsequent rehash. But if you were serious, you're wrong.

Bragging rights? Its a fact, I don't "want" mine under 60 either, are you saying you do? I don't know why people continue to claim that "I" can't see the difference between what would be considered barely tolerable in some instances (40 fps) and acceptable (60fps) and desireable (100fps). Maybe "you" can't but "I" can.

I say in some instances, because what is acceptable, or noticable or adequate is subjective and it changes depending on what you are viewing and how you are viewing it. I guarantee, that after you play at high framerates for any length of time makes it frustrating to play at lower framerates, that alone should be adequate proof for anyone that there is a difference even if you can't "see" it.

Claiming how many fps the human eye can distinguish is like claiming how far the human legs can jump, both are absurd arguments as every indvidual is different.

Personally, even in quick moving FPS games anything over about 45fps is butter to me, down to about 30fps is acceptable and after that it is downright anyoing. In slower moving games I often don't notice drops into the 20s, but even in the movie theater I am occasionally annoyed by the choppyness of 25fps.

For Gameplay <30(approx) minimum FPS becomes an issue

For Visual differences <60 minimum FPS becomes increasingly noticeable the lower it gets.

Take your favourite FPS (or FPS comparison tool if you have one) and cap it at 30 FPS. Play for several hours and then uncap it and play for another few hours.

You should easily be able to tell the difference between the two.

Not nessacarly, 30fps is really all it takes for some people to be convinced of smooth motion; for such people more framerate isn't going to do anything.

The 60fps probably means you have vsync on at 60hz, i'm pretty sure that even my old geforce3 pulled more than 60fps in that app.

I'm on a geforce 2 o_o

This comp is from 1999. My new one should be here Monday.

I'm a little exicted. Just a little.

agreed, but thats only if it never drops below 25. if you look at a readout of fps, there can be some huge spikes. playing halo on my 5200 ultra128mb, i got spikes anywhere from 5fps to 50fps.
