When did tipping become "required".

It seems like most people who think tipping is required, worked in an environment where tipping happened (restaurant, spa, barber, etc...).

Having never worked in any of those environments, I am having a tough time rationalizing why they think tipping is required.

To me, if someone provided me a helpful service in a courteous way, then I will probably tip them. However, it should be my choice and should definitely not be demanded or expected.

My sister-in-law (a former waitress) vehemently disagrees.

[EDIT]If it is required, then it should be part of the menu price of the food. It should not be added later as an extra item.[/EDIT]

Consistently bad tipper = eating special sauce

Tip out of courtesy to the person serving you. They can't always be at your table, and unless you can tell that they are just being lazy, there is no reason to not tip. Even if service is poor, leave a smaller tip, and talk to management about it. If service is good, let them know, but tipping them well. Leaving no tip is just plain rude.

Do you need a bigger stick to beat this dead horse with, mister?

Okay, here's the rationale:

- As a server, you get minimum wage, or in some cases, far less such as CO where it's $2.17 an hour.
- You split tips with busboys, kitchen, bartender, and pay taxes on it.
- You are paid commensurate with the quality of service you provide, as a general rule. However, you will always encounter people who don't understand this custom. Deal with it.

- As a restaurant goer, you have the right to expect reasonable service.
- The "reasonable service" comes at a cost of 15% of your check. If you don't like it, then you are obviously very poor at functioning in normal society and you should STOP EATING OUT.
- For exceptional service, you can tip 18-20% or more if inclined.
- For poor service, you can tip less than 15% but be sure to mention it to a supervisor/manager so the problem can be recognized and fixed. DO NOT stiff the server without explanation, walk home, and gripe angrily on a message board, because that just makes you an even bigger toolbag than you already are.
- If you would rather the restaurant automatically charge you for gratuity, move to europe where you don't have a choice in the matter.
- To reiterate, IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN / UNDERSTAND "TIPPING" THEN DO NOT -- REPEAT -- DO NOT EAT OUT. Stay home and make your own goddamn food you stupid cheap bastard.

Actually, a waiter cannot make less than minimum wage. If tips and base wage add up to less than the minimum, the employer is required to make up the difference. Please be aware of this and stop spreading the "THEY GET PAID NOTHING" misinformation as well as moronic ad hominems against people who have qualms with the tipping system. I believe there was a link to the Department of Labor website that contained this information; however I can't find it at the moment. If anyone finds it, do link.

Whatever. A good waiter/waitress can be busy as hell and still be at your table all the time...

If I get craptastic service, then the person will not get my money.

Again, just to get my point across:

Tipping is what is known as a "social custom" or "etiquette." Other common social customs are acknowledging a passer by on the street if they say, "Good morning!" shaking hands with someone you just met, holding the door open for someone with their hands full, not diving into your meal until everyone has been served, waiting in line to be served, et cetera.

These are things that any normal, civilized human is expected to do when interacting with society. These are not laws, but as I said, social customs, so you are not at all required to follow these. You do not, however, have the right to complain if people think you are rude for not following along. This is how we have constructed our society, and if you don't like it, get the hell out. There's plenty of third world nations that don't give a flying rat's ass about tipping, and no one is stopping you from moving there.

All jokes aside, was using that word really necessary? :frown:

I was just quoting from the movie. I will remove it as it seems to offend.

Don't remove it, some people seem to be completely unaware of what is going on in this thread.

Let them be confused.

Is it a social custom to pay for service you don't receive? In any business transaction, BOTH parties have to be accommodated! If you don't provide me any service, then you're not getting a damn tip. It really is that simple.

That said, I don't think I've ever felt that I received such poor service that I didn't tip. I tip extremely well for excellent service.

dude, do you know what the min wage is? $5.15, if any wait person couldn't make at least that much an hour with the $2-3$ base pay + tips, he or she should find a different job. and YES, and bad waitress DO get pay nothing. ;)

you've never been a waiter. that very well may be the law, but the day you show me a real world restaurant that actually does that, is the day that pigs fly.

I don't have any problem with it - but some members have gotten vacations for using it lately, and without knowing that it was a quote from a movie could lead to someone being offended (although I don't know what it's from :p ). Put quotation marks around it and keep it, but just let others know what it's quoted from.
