The only thing that hasn't jumped in price is my paycheque. :(

The fresh baked bread from the local Italian bakery here is just over $1, but it has no preservatives (so it only lasts a day) and doesn't toast well (dries out). Tastes better untoasted though. Guess we'll just have to put up with the cons.

My mom bakes her own bread and it lasts much longer than 1 day. She doesn't use any preservatives either.

Food in general is fucking skyrocketing.

Went to our local grocery store today to pick up a few things and was appalled at the price of things.

$3.59 for hamburger buns? $5 for a 12 pack of Pepsi? Oscar Meyer beef hot dogs for $4.79? Frescetta frozen pizzas for $8.99?

What the fuck?

My wife will be finishing school to be an RN in about 2.5 years. If she gets a $50k job, that should just about cover our grocery budget. Jesus Christ.

maybe you should look at moving. $1 for hamburger buns here, 3 12 packs for 11, most times you can get bogo free on the hotdogs(oscar or ballpark), and domino's large pizzas can be had for 6 or 7 dollars.

funny thing is, Rye bread is what the poorest of the poor people used to eat since medieval times till recent years. i guess perhaps its not as popular and perhaps why it costs so much?

but yeah, white bread is the gay. how can anyone eat that flavorless junk?
You've never tried Agege bread.
You're missing out, dude.

It's the supermarket trying to make bank. No way the bakery gets a significant chunk of that. Similarly, beer prices have taken a jump. The local health food market wants $9 a six pack for Nimbus that's brewed 4 miles away. Screw em all. I either buy reasonably priced goods or do without.

Ok, time for another "Big" label to demonize supermarkets. Time to call them "Big Supermarket" just like "Big Oil" and "Big Pharma" and every other "Big <insert demonized object here>"

No, they're doing fine on their own. They push crap on consumers and lie with a straight face that it's customer demand that drives what they carry.

when did a freaking loaf of bread hit the $3.50 mark??

Due to the drought in the south this year, corn prices went up.

As corn prices went up, cattle farmers started using grain based feeds.

Since more cattle farmers are using grain based feed, this means less grains for stuff like bread.

One thing to think about, scientist are predicting another 10 years of drought in the south. If you think the price of food has gone up, just wait and see what happens if the south goes through another drought like it did in 2011. Lets say the drought last another 2 - 3 years, this means things could really get bad. My wife and I have started stockpiling all kinds of rice, beans, canned goods, canned corn, green beans,,,, most of the stuff we eat.

My wife and I went to the local walmart tonight to buy some cans of refried beans. In the past week the prices have gone up 8 cents. 8 cents might not seem like a lot, but at $1 a can, that is 8%.

They can't predict the weather accurately more than 10 days in advance, and even 10 days is sketchy as it is. And they are talking about the next 10 years? Needs a lot of salt.

Hopefully the drought will only last 5 years.

At our house we've moved more and more towards making things from scratch and avoiding convenience foods.

We used to buy pancake mix, now I make them from scratch. Same with Taco Seasoning, cinnamon rolls, pizza dough, etc. Looks like we should add bread to that list.
