It's not about views of the Iraq war, it's about having some of that respect for those who serve that you all brag about having. Sure, those people who died in Iraq or on 9/11, or who have relatives who did, are great and deserve support...as long as they support your agenda. This isn't about politics, it's about basic human decency. She has every right to do what she is doing, partially because she's an American like the rest of us, and partially because this conflict is a lot more personal for her than it is for most of us. But you don't respect her rights as an American, and you don't have any compassion for the loss of her son. There is something really wrong with you when politics comes before everything else.

If that's what you believe, I have no problem with that. But the stuff I hear (including stuff in this thread) suggested the opposite to me. If I'm wrong, that's my bad.

But I also think it's worth noting that the idea of seperating support/respect/sympathy/etc for a person with their views is not a viewpoint a lot of people have in other cases. Not saying you do or don't, I'm just saying that this sort of thing works best when it's applied everywhere.

As to the validity of her complaints, although it certainly is a possibility that you might die when you join the army...I think every person who joins up hopes that if they have to die, it's for a good cause. And if it isn't, I would think most of them would like the rest of us to ask questions. I'm not passing judgement on Iraq here, I'm just saying that "hey, you signed up" shouldn't be a get out of jail free card.

Why is that hard to understand? Have you ever watched a sports team you support screw up a game? Did you stop hoping they'd win, or did you get upset about their bungling? Has anyone on a sports team you support ever been exposed as breaking the law, using drugs, whatever? Did you stop supporting the team, or did you become unhappy with the specific player(s) who were in the wrong?

We can support the same end while disagreeing on the means to that end.

Bush has the remainder of three weeks left of his vacation. Cindy might induce W to return to work ahead of schedule. That would be something he has never done in his life before now.

If Ms Sheehan had seen some hint of success in the effort that took her son, she wouldn't be there. Rumsfeld had the good sense to force General Shinseki into retirement. Shinseki only proffered the necessary number of troops for success in Iraq.

Now, the US and its laughable coalition can't begin to muster another Operation Fallujah. We had to borrow a brigade of Brits to free up the troops needed for investing Fallujah.

It's rob Peter to pay Paul in Iraq. Fallujah was small beans compared to a city like Mosul. Do the math.

It's surprising that Bush hasn't been ambushed by mothers of dead soldiers before.

Bowfinger pretty much hit the nail on the head. My (and others') disagreement with Bush and his supporters isn't over their overall end goal, it's with the way they wants to reach the goal. I have no problem with the desire to find some kind of victory in Iraq, and the war on terror as a whole, but so far I'm not convinced any of you could protect a lemonade stand or defeat the Shriners. I realize that seems a little extreme of a generalization, but for some reason some people still don't get this point. It is not that complex...I'm fine with the goals, the methods...not so much.
