What's your opinion of 1and1 web hosting?

I took Rossman's advice and signed up for the free 3 years at 1and1.com (see Christmas Broadband link below). I think it's great. I was very skeptical, and researched it quite a bit. It seems every bit as legit, if not more, than other web hosting companies.

My brother does webmastering for his company and just published this site http://www.partyproaz.com. He's not formally trained (as you can tell) and is just doing this temporarily until he can start college again. I mentioned that his pictures load slowly, and asked if he used 1and1 for his web hosting. He said no, because his boss didn't want them if they're free. He said if they're not making any money, then they can't provide good service. So instead, they're using some fly-by-night web hosting, because his boss feels better about paying $30/month than getting quality web hosting for free. I hate people so ignorant.

I'm using 1and1 and it's doing what I need it to do. I don't have a fancy site or anything but overall I'm pleased with the hosting...and you can't really beat the price. If you are just an average person who needs an average site then I'd recommend it...

tons of us signed up. I have no problems with it except the painfully slow control panel stuff. But I know at some time in the future they will hold us hostage, no doubt about it. I wouldnt put my businness site up with them but personal sure.

Rossman did tell everyone about it but never bit himself and he oneday, before quickly editing it, said he had info that showed 1and1 were in thefuture going to screw all of us that signed up in some fashion.

I signed up and so far it's fine. My only gripe is it takes to long to access the webmail feature which is buried about 5 clicks deep after you sign in. But for a free service I can't complain at all.

Not sure how they can screw us, other than taking away our "Free" account. I only forward a domain there, and all the content I have backup of. I'm not worried.

I've been happy with it so far. FTP Up/down is quick and it's just nice to have free space to put things on!

Exactly. They don't have any CC info. As long as you have an off-line backup of your content (which you should anyway!), you really have nothing to lose.

Here's why I didn't go with 1and1 (cut-pasted from my site):

Section 3.3 of the Terms & Conditions:
Domain Names may be registered by 1&1 on your behalf through a variety of Domain Name Registration Services (each a "Registrar"). Each Registrar has its own terms and conditions concerning the registration and maintenance of domain names and you agree to be bound thereby.

Plus there's some ambiguous stuff about how they can insert advertisements anywhere they want and they can start charging you money with only 30 days notice at any time.

* * *

It does seem risky. What stops them from signing you up for some $3,000/month Domain Name Registration service? If you use their service, you've basically already given them the power to do that, right?

I'd rather use RippleHost ($9.99/year for 100 MB + 1 GB/mo.).

Damn I was hoping no one saw my post before I edited it, oh well.

I personally think it's a scam but thousands of people have signed up, no credit card info is required and their web sites are working. So for those people it's the best thing since freshly squeezed Florida orange juice.

Then again I share a dedicated server at ThePlanet.com and have all the web hosting I need :)

I agree with Ogg for a personal or hobby web site 1and1 should be fine, otherwise if you're going to host a business web site pay for an established web host.

I registered my domain name through GoDaddy. 1&1 has no claim to it.

If they decide to start charging or start throwing ads in, I've lost nothing, I'll just get another hosting company.

Ripplehost is 2GB max bandwidth now... I was pleasantly suprised when I got an email saying they added an extra GB :D

Yep Alan recently confirmed this on WHT, very nice :)

Bang for your buck it's hard to beat RippleHost.

HostPC.com comes close (with better control panel and actual support) but they don't offer as much disk space or bandwidth.

Ditto.

Not to mention they have no billing information from me.

That's not what it means... the part I bolded means they can sign you up for domain names without asking you (it doesn't matter if you already have a domain name registered elsewhere). Granted, there'd be a lot of complaints, but this is what you're giving them power to do when you agree to their terms & conditions.

EDIT: Messed up the quote-tags.

I guess I can't figure out why they would do that and how that would be bad for me. So 1&1 registers a domain under my name....they just gave me a domain. I can't be charged for it because they have no billing information. It doesn't make sense....

What benefit would they have to register domains on your behalf? And what disadvantage is it to me if they do? They don't have any billing info. (Edit: Ditto, Jzero. You posted when I was typing. Great minds think alike.)

I don't think it's a scam at all. I see the largest webhosting company in Europe (or England) expanding to the US, and they figure that by giving away free accounts, at least a portion will continue to do business with them rather than jump ship. Businesses look at the long term. They're thinking if they give away tons of new accounts, maybe 25% will stay as customers in 3 years. That's probably more than they could have solicited through normal advertising. I don't expect a hostage situation at all. I think 1and1 will be a household name in the next few years.

I use HostPC and am nothing but happy with them. They run specials every now and then where you can get excellent hosting packages for a low price (I think I've got 8gb bandwidth, 300mb space for no more than $30/yr). Support is very fast and helpful.

I had a trial with e-rice (is that even around anymore?) which might have been a little cheaper, however I wanted the bigger bandwidth allotment per month because I was going to be hosting pictures and email for my family. I am very happy with HostPC

They have your address; that would be enough for mailing bills... and if you don't pay up, they could turn you over to a collections agency which could in turn ruin your credit rating, etc.

Translation: We can sign you up for domain names through any company and you automatically agree to whatever those companies say you have to do.

Thank you for your feedback.

I recently signed up for HostPC's Hot Deal $25/yr gives me 300MB/8GB with DirectAdmin control panel.

So far smooth sailing :)

Assuming they have your real address.
Besides, I don't think they can do much to your credit rating without your SSN.

I still don't see why they would bother doing this anyway.

LOL you moron. that's not what that means. all that means is that if you go on their site and register a domain name through them, they register it for you through a third party. you are authorizing them to do so. hahaha. jesus, you guys are something else.
