Hello,

I am looking at buying Antec High Current Gamer 650W power supply.

Seems decent for that price, but it's a Tier D unit according to the tier list over on linustechtips.
Should I get the Gigabyte P650B? What would be the better choice?

Thanks.

Generally agreed. If I see anyone looking at EVGA, I would just say . . . get a G2, if what you want is Gold. Too bad G2s cost so much.
They are still great units, but like you said they are getting more expensive as their remaining supply dwindles.

I got a pair of 650W G+ units (*FSP-made, I think) previous BF, works fine so far. They were $60.

I seem to have mis-laid the cables for them though, and it's confusing which cable sets on EVGA correspond. Seems that this PSU goes by "G+", "G1+", and "GP" when it comes to cable sets. ("G Plus"?) At least, when I cross-references the numeric product-id codes from EVGA for the PSU (so helpfully hyperlinked on their site).

Regardless, they wanted $100 for the full cable set (OK, "sleeved", but still, more than the PSU cost itself)? Maybe I should just buy a spare PSU, and borrow the cables, and if the base unit ever fails, I'll have a spare.

EVGA has really made a mess out of their PSU lineup as well (outside of not using Super Flower for any current models). Way too many different models, with different OEMs, and with products overlapping each other.

For example, there really isn't a need to offer 7 different gold rated models, as it becomes overwhelming for a consumer trying to figure out which one to buy. Hell, it's too much effort for me to keep track of in order to recommend a unit to someone, and I'm not making a spreadsheet to keep them all sorted out. :p
After doing some research....I agree! Also if you look at the EVGA Units tested by JonnyGuru`s site their overall rating left a lot to be desired@!! Peace!

After further thought, this tier list is of most value to those who can't afford them. As in, the places in which these protections would come in handy are the places where a lot of buyers have no budget to get these higher tier PSUs. For example, India and their flaky electrical grid in many locales.

You`ve heard the saying I am sure that you need to budget accordingly before you purchase the rest of your equipment! You don`t build your machine and then decide you only have $30 dollars for a PSU! When instead of purchasing that cutting egde video card or cutting edge processor you could have purchased something not quite cutting edge and had money for good psu!

India is a place where electronics are more expensive to buy there than elsewhere. They are a developing country and thus running out of budget is precisely a problem there. Their electrical infrastructure is far more flaky, and their codes reflective of a place that can't afford protection...at least one person in Hyderabad died from water and a washing machine because it wasn't grounded....

Here in the U.S now, the rural residents are relatively well-off landowners with access to many amenities, well water notwithstanding. In India, the rural residents are living in far more brutal life.

Ebay still has sub-30 dollar Rosewill Capstone 450W modular units, XFX PSUs that use Seasonics, and Seasonics of yesteryear. Between the choice of a new Coolmax or these old reliables, the choice is clearly favorable to the EBay used units of quality.
