Anything you can responsibly afford is fine - as long as you're not going in debt for your lifestyle and are responsibly meeting your payments, then it doesn't matter.

Are you doing any savings?

Heh, I'm on my parents cell too, I pay my mom $10 a month.

$4000 a month for 2 people on a combined net income of $5500

edit: My debt payments are Mortgage, Car, and Student Loans... no other debt.

That accounts for about $1900. The rest is utilities, insurance, food, tv/internet/cell, entertainment, etc...

If we absolutely had to, I think we could cut our monthly down to $3000.

No Mortgage, Real Estate Taxes or Home Owner's Insurance?

You only eat at lunch? For $1/day?

wow, that is some cheap living

This is mine:

Rent - 535 (water and trash pickup included)
Car - 0 (new vehicle paid with cash)
Cell phone - 35 (SERO FTW)
Daily lunch at work + Parking - ~100 if I brownbag and free parking
Student loans - 0 (paid off years ago)
Gym - 0 (need to go back)
Car Insurance - 40 (multi line and multi cars and good driving discounts FTW)
Gas - 25 (live about 2 miles from work)
Electricity - 50
Cable/Internet - 40 (DSL only - no land line)

I have zero debt, yup, that's right, no CC, nothing, nada. Always pay off my balance every month and get the 3% cash back (up to $150 as of last week).

OP, you forgot about breakfast, diner and meals/going out to eat or investment/savings

What about health insurance? or renter insurance? or entertaintment such as movies/concert/sporting events/magzines/books/etc?

Or clothes and laudry?

If you want to know exactly where your money go, make a list of everything you spend on for a couple months

Rent - 519 (utilities included)
Car - 0 (new vehicle paid with cash)
Cell phone - $40
Food - ~750 (includes dinners out etc.)
Gas - 100
Internet - $49

Total: $1458
i currently take home ~2600 a month

once i move to new york i'm going to get raped 🙁

Here is my current setup.
Rent: $765 - living with roommates, will go up to $1350 in a month when I get a place of my own.
Car: $350 - down to $0 tomorrow when I pay it off
Cell: $0 - Paid for by work
Food: $300 - why are people only counting lunch?
Student Loans: $100
Gym: $39
Car + Renters Insurance: $100
Gas: $50
Electric/TV/Internet: $0 - Included in rent now, will be $150 on my own

So currently I send about $1700/m and net about $2400-2600. But when I move out on my own, i'll be spending about $2100/m, but i'm working more hours now so i'll net $3000-3300. Of course this doesn't include going out, beer, entertainment, etc. Am I living within my means?

mortgage: $2000 minimum + extra principal payment, currently doing an extra $700
two cell phones: $55, might cancel one of these since wife just always uses her work one now
car: $0 for now. my car is old and will need to be replaced soon, but i'm hoping i can pay cash at least for most of it.
student loans: $1000 (all from wife's law school)
tv/internet: $90 i think, $50 TV + $40 internet... where are you people getting both TV and internet for $40 or $45? 😛
electricity: $40 in the winter, $70 in the summer
natural gas (heat etc): $100 in the winter, $20 in the summer
gasoline: $150 with current prices
car insurance: i think it's 5 payments of $90 per 6 months, so that averages out to $75 a month
eating out, work lunches and dinners: $400 probably
groceries: probably another $300+, haven't calculated for awhile
gym/etc: $120? (martial arts classes for me, personal trainer for wife)

so that's like $5000.

edit: oh, i know what i forgot, the frakking condo fee. add another $285.

electric 40
association (garbage, internet, heat, etc) 200
mortgage 750
car insurance/condo insurance 260
Dish 50
phone 80
car payment 400
student laons 100

total 1890 per month

food is very variable for me and the GF...can range from 250-400 a month.

we take in about 4000 after taxes (401k) every month...she is still a student, so anything she can do is good enough for me 🙂
