What's your gasoline costing?

Safeway, up to $5.19.

Nah...not yet. Give it a couple more $$$ and maybe.
I'm still cringing over the $2000+ it's gonna cost to install a level 2 charger. I might try level 1 charging since I don't really drive much and supplement with public DC charging when I need it.
Why so much for an L2 charger?

Cost of copper is crazy now days. Cost me about a grand for 45m of 6/3 teck when I did my garage sub panel. In that process if I get an EV in the future the worst of it is already done though. The EV charger would be going outside on the wall opposite to the panel so very short run.

As a side note L1 charging might be fine if he has a dedicated 15 amp outlet somewhere outside to use. Ex whatever the block heater would normally plug into. Consider the fact that if you plug in as soon as you get to work, you get around ~15 hours of charging before you have to unplug and leave depending on your shifts. In my case it would be like 11 but then I get more days off so it would be charging all day sometimes.

1.82/litre here now at one station, although another station showing 1.79 and another 1.77 all updated within the last hour. So kind of all over the place. They tend to jack the prices on long weekends so probably come down a bit mid week.

Charger is only $400-$600, depending on which one…the expense is having 50’ of 60 amp circuit pulled. Fckn wire is ‘spensive!
As the video Red Squirrel posted (circa 17:45-20:00), you could go with a lower amperage circuit for L2, like a 30 or 40 amp circuit if you wanted to cut the cost; and you'll still likely have more than enough charging capabilities.

Or if you have a 240V/higher amp plug nearby, for say a dryer, you could get an automatic splitter.

Yeah, I’m thinking about upgrading the 15 amp outlet in my garage. (New box and outlets…existing ones are pretty beat to shit) Level 1 charging MIGHT work for me.

I had considered installing a NEMA 14-50 wall outlet, but that adds a couple of other considerations. First, the use of an outlet limits the charger to 40 amps. Then, if it’s a plug in, it requires that I use GFCI breakers in my pnel. Frickin GFCI breakers have gotten SPENDY. A pair of 60 amp GFCI breakers are about $125…and could be Much more, depending on my panel. Fortunately, if I hardwire the charger, I don’t have to have GFCI breakers.

No such luck. The dryer plug is actually farther than the panel. The difference in price for a lower amperage set up isn’t enough of a savings to really consider it.

Is there a dedicated 120v plug, that has nothing else connected to it? You could swap out the breaker for a double pole and make it a 240v 15a circuit, it will give let you charge at around 3000w or so.

Depending on the wiring a 5-20P (20A) dedicated outlet might be more than sufficient. Just make sure you have 12G wiring for it.

That is the problem with a 14-50 outlet, GFCI. Electrical code wants GFCI breaker for a outlet in the garage but the EV Charger has already GFCI protection built in. A lot of install documentation for EV Chargers will specifically tell you not to have a GFCI breaker on the EV Charger circuit because it will conflict with the built in GFCI protection on the charger and you can get nuisance tripping. The people that do the electrical code and the manufacturers of the EV chargers need to talk with each other. One way to get around this is just do a hard-wire which negates the requirements for a GFCI breaker. Or just self install a 14-50 outlet and not get a permit or find a electrician that will do the install without a permit. Did you talk with any electrician you had out about this GFCI conflict?

For home charging, 40 amp circuit is probably fine though because the vehicle has tons of time to charge just sitting around overnight and whatnot.

Though I understand the rationale to go with a higher current circuit and a form of future proofing if it is marginally more money to do it if you're going to need the work done.

Still waiting on those gasoline powered truck prices to drop. Come on people, go electric!

The prices are absurd now. can't justify to spend that kind of money. I was tempted when I was on the market for a new truck because there's something to be said for having something brand new that I don't have to worry about anything going wrong for the next few years, but financially it just makes no sense. If I'm going to spend that kind of money I rather buy a tractor or other toy that I will have for longer. Once the mortgage is paid off I might actually start shopping for one, there's a lot of projects on the property that would go faster if I had machinery.

Having just spent part of my life in a dealership...I can say I didn't see any real reduction in prices for dino burners. Still hanging at $50-60K for a decent quality mid-level trim (XLT) F150 4x4. (and if you're gonna buy a truck, why wouldn't you buy a 4x4 unless MAYBE if you lived in the deep south...and even then...) Even used trucks with over 50,000 miles are close to $40,000.

I filled my tank on Friday, March 6, six days after the war started. It was $4.60/gallon in Richmond, California for regular. 9.06 gallons cost me $41.65. Prices were going up daily and have continued up I guess. I've driven ~30 miles since.

Just checked Gasbuddy.com. The Costco is $5.49.

Yeah, I'd love a truck, but it just doesn't make economic sense unless my car gets totaled. I like in the hinterlands, so trucks are especially desirable around here. I hate paying $75 to get one big run of pipe or plywood delivered or $350 for a new argon tank, but I'd need three lifetimes worth of both to justify even trading my car in on a new truck.

You could always have a hitch installed on a car and just attach a trailer when you need to take something larger home, if you were doing that often enough.

I've thought about getting something like that, but I've got a 2022 Subaru WRX and the internet consensus seems to be that I absolutely shouldn't. I also like to kayak fish, but even with a proper roof rack, the prospect of putting that thing on my car is terrifying. Still not worth the truck cost though.

What's wrong with a hitch? I had one installed on my '23 Elantra Hybrid so I could carry our bikes with a hitch rack. I would never have tried to install it myself, but the place I bought it from did a great job installing it (took them 3-4 hours and a few hundred dollars, but very worth it).

I briefly considered a roof setup, but I don't want to lift bikes over my head. We also park in a private garage, so I could see an accident happening too if we had a lapse in judgement...

Two loaded tanks plus the rack would be on the order of 400 pounds and would really mess with the suspension. I'm going to ask the dealership I bought it from if it's reasonable - it would give me a way to carry argon, CO2, and propane, so it would be really convenient.

Unfortunately none of my local suppliers will come and fill up my tanks or swap them out.

-The internet thinks all subraus suck and you should die for buying one so...

(I have two and honestly they do kinda suck).

You could always find a decent used truck...keep it as a second vehicle. It's amazing how many "truck things" you'll find that you need to do once you own a truck.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do, but they're selling like hotcakes here. I almost bought one, then the dealer told me it needed a welded box frame reinforcement. I bailed and it sold the next day.

Other than the infotainment system, which is a war crime, I've had zero issues with the car. I'm a big fan. I just bought it before I started my truck-needing hobbies. I looked at trading it in, but I'd only get something like $20K, which means I'd be out another $20K on a good truck, which isn't really worth it for me.
