Hands down my favorite fantasy movie would be the first Lord of the Rings. As far as scifi goes I'd have to say Blade Runner, that movie was truly one of Harrison Ford's classics.

Runner ups:

The first 3 Star Wars (when are these gonna be released on DVD)

Mad Max

Gattaca

Ameesh

In which Greedo fires first in the cantina, and where Luke gives out a terrified scream in the cloud city after he intentionally lets go.

Like I've said before, Lucas could do with a bit of blunt impact trauma therapy.

In the late 90's, Lucas released Special versions. They have enhanced special effects and a few more scenes in each movie. I like both the original and the special versions so it doesn't bother me any. You can pre-order now on amazon.com if you like. The box art looks pretty nice. There are going to be some extras in the set.

The re releases of the films with a bunch of rather crappy looking CG animation added in. They almost ruin the original movies with it added.

LOTR for fantasy for sure

SciFi: That's a real tough one. When I was younger certain Old SciFi movies stood out, though I don't recall their names.

1) "Year 0"(I believe) a story of a LA family on vacation when a Nuclear Holocaust occurs and their fight for survival. Certainly not the best movie of that genre, but it had a creepy reality showing mass panic and people's decent into barbarism. If I were to watch it today I'd probably not like it, but it has been a long time.

2) Another creepy movie from the 60's which I have no recollection of the title was about a disease that kills off most humans, which had a habit of returning as zombies and killing their family members, and 1 mans' struggle to survive(he later finds a few more uninfected Humans). Probably wouldn't like this one either, but thought it was way cool way back when.

3) thee are a ton of Japanese and US space movies from the same era (50s-60s) that are also fairly good on some levels at least

4) My favorites though are more recent: Mad Max Road Warrior, Blade Runner, Matrix trilogy, first 2 Aliien movies, 2001 A Space Odyssey, first 3(made) Star Wars films, BattleStar Galactica(original, though remake isn't bad), aaaargh too many to list or choose from

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension
The 5th Element

All fun stuff :)

2001: A Space Odyssey

Not really into fantasy, but I guess it'd be LOTR.

That's a good one. A classic. I have to say I loved Blade Runner - Director's Cut.

EDIT: And for all the people that post that "The 5th Element" was a good movie, you are not allowed to vote. The 5th element is love? That's FAR too cheesy to give it a "classic" movie crown. That movie was horrible, but the ending alone disqualifies it from any awards or recognition.

And Chris Tucker's performance was great! (Yes, it's got boobies, if you can call Milla's little titties "boobies"..)
