Smirnoff Ice is technically malt liquor. Beer yeast ferments sugars from malted barley. Smirnoff Ice and the like do not have hard alcohol in them, diluted to 5% or whatever. Instead they get their alcohol from fermenting *straight sugars or other additives instead of real grain. So technically they can get away with being sold as a malted beverage, this is because many states would not allow it to be sold in regular stores vs. state run stores.

There is a proper term for fermenting from straight sugars or rice extracts, can't remember it from my homebrewing days however. Something like compound extracts.

For when I just want a couple of nice beers, I prefer stuff like Boddingtons, Belhaven, Guinness, etc. For when I want to drink more like a sixer, I'll do Shiner or Dos Equis.

Strangely enough, Dos Equis' mild sweetness does compliment Mexican food. However, there is too much variation in quality from sixer to sixer in my experience. I would think that when you can get a fresh and properly stored bottle it wouldn't be half bad. If nothing else their genius ad campaign is worth buying one from time to time for support.

He bowls... overhand.

I migrate around quite a bit, like many others.
I generally like all Hefeweizen/Wheat beers though, so I voted for that.

The only style I absolutely hate is that new Bourbon style beer.
All the horrible taste of bourbon without the alcohol content.

Bourbon style beer? Have not heard of that. Didn't Miller try making a tequila tasting beer? Personally, I don't see the attraction of combining, if you want a beer, have one. If you want bourbon, have that. Am not aware of any combo that surpasses or even comes close to working.

Yeah I will drink most things. I avoid the worst of the watered-down American light beers, but they're not all terrible. Can't drink IPAs or anything else that is too hoppy either.

It seems as though a lot of brewers are moving to one extreme or the other. The macrobrews are offering lighter and lighter versions until you're practically drinking water (MGD 64 anyone?), which is causing microbrews to go just as crazy in the opposite direction with adding more and more and more hops until the beer is completely undrinkable. I like beers that are in the middle. Some thickness and color, but not too much.

There's always a new gimmick coming out of the big breweries. Bud Light with Lime, Budweiser with caffeine (that one's gone now), Coors Light with color-changing mountains, Miller Light with a grooved vortex bottle... I just don't get it.

Yes, a ton of gimmicks out there, did not know about the caffeinated one, thats just crazy dumb. I hope they are doing this as a result of declining market share lost to microbrews.

It's close between stouts, Belgian ales, and Lambics/Gueuzes/Flemish Reds. Really depends on my mood, and the latter are near impossible to find down here. However, I did pick up a 750 of Rodenbach Grand Cru and Duchesse De Bourgogne from Total Wine this past weekend. 🙂

IPA has been my beer of choice lately but now that my local liquor store has some Arrogant Bastard Ale in stock, I think I'll be on an American Strong Ale kick for a while.

The bourbon beers I have seen are from microbrewers.
I'm sure someone will chime in and clue us in to the actual makers.

I have a few friends who absolutely love it.

Impossible. All styles are awesome.

I really like a good porter, though. Trippel, Quad and Dubble (Belgian) are next in line for me, generally. Stouts, and IPA, too.

I seldom drink Lager or Heffe. I like Pilsner, but don't drink it too often, either.

Oskar Blues makes a fantastic Scotch Ale. I'm trying to remember the really tasty Bourbon Beer that I used to love, but memory escapes me...for some reason. 😕

These guys are great: Dale's Pale Ale, Ten Fiddy, Old Chub--all canned awesomeness.

Belgian Quads, Imperial Stouts, Imperial IPAs, Chocolate Stouts, Anything with Sour Cherries in it (Cherry Stouts such as the New Glarus Unplugged, or New Glarus Belgian Red ... mmmmmmm), wheat beer is a win also .... any hefeweizen or Goose Island 312... mmmm

Also, while technically it's own thing ... Mead is fvckin great too...

You'd probably love this Kriek from Cantillon

I was in Brussels a few years back and toured the brewery. They were bringing the cherries in that week, and we were able to chill with a fresh Kriek and munch on some cherries straight from the pallets. yum.

A light and refreshing lager.

Don't really have anything against darker beers/ales, but it feels like you're drinking a whole liquid dinner..

True. A lot of gimmicky things are from the small breweries. I've seen strawberry and watermelon beer from microbreweries. Both were... unusual. The watermelon was really watery (big surprise huh?).

The macros seem to like to do more with the packaging though. Guess they can afford to. I'd rather see a company take a chance with a unique or interesting flavor than just trying to sucker people into buying their beer because the mountains turn blue or whatever.

That caffeinated Budweiser was called B^E (actually B with a superscript E but I can't make that here). Ran from 2004 to 2008.

Good beers. Bonus points for putting them in cans.

Even so, my current favorite brew, and this reminds me I need to resupply, is a Belgian: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/10557/21112

Yea, I enjoy cherry lambic's quite a bit. Never been overseas (I've been to Mexico, Canada, and various parts of the carribean), but I do plan on making a holy pilgrimage to Belgium one day. 🙂

Was over in Savannah on vacation this weekend and had a lot of good local brews at the Moon River brewing company (Captain porter is freaking awesome btw) and a few other places. It got me thinking about various beer styles, and then I realized I was curious what you guys like. So what kind of beer is your favorite?

Guiness extra stout, i don't drink any other beer.

Since you mentioned Pilsner and i had forgotten, i might add to my previous post that a cool Pilsner isn't a bad thing when fucking a hot german woman in Bern.
