Whats wrong with me?

Is it just me or does it seem like my computer can never be fast enough or tweaked enough or whatever. I've already spent thousands on computer stuff but no matter how fast it gets its not fast enough. I've been tweaking my cpu for awhile now. I've got it to a stable 3.75 running cool seems great. Now I've been recently trying 4.0ghz and had it almost stable but a little too hot. Now back down to 3.75. For some reason I keep trying to figure out ways get it cooler. Maybe an air conditioning duct with a high power 120mm fan inside my case blowing directly on my cpu? To complement my push/pull config already cooling my cpu? WTF? Hold on a second there was a slight 2 sec delay? Gotta have that new SSD worth a weeks pay?

Technology seems useless when it can be devastated in 3.4 seconds by a toddler.

Clearly your problem is not hardware but software related.
Try installing Windows 98 on your super cooled quad core overclocked to 19 Gazillionhertz 16 mb cache Core cpu.
See if that helps.

You seemed to of missed the point completely. I can't seem to be complacent with my computer build no matter what. Regardless of speed or quality it is never good enough. I was also wondering if there are others out there that do this. Its like some obsession with the unachievable perfect build. Hey it sounds crazy thats why I was wondering if there was others.

Yeah.. I think we all have the need for faster systems... I want crysis to run flawlessly, but I'll never get that with any hardware even released in the next few years.

send all your hardware to me and I'll protect them from you at a low cost. At another note, It's not that hard to run crysis... I do it with the auto dectected settings (high) at a constant 30fps.

I've become content with modern computers. I can spend $800 and build a computer which runs pretty smooth. Sometimes I wait 1/10 second but I can handle that. For me, overclocking and building a $5000 computer do not make sense.

I can see it making sense if you do computations that take time. Say you do some 3d work and a render takes 10 minutes. I can see spending lots of money so it only takes 5 minutes. But for what I do, I don't care at all.

The problem is probably when you go and upgrade the hardware you also "upgrade" the software, to something that uses 10x the resources as the previous software. Especially OS.

For example, a computer with a single core CPU and 2GB of ram running XP will run just as fast as a quad core cpu machine with 12GB of ram running Vista. The key to really seeing the performance out of hardware upgrades is to install the exact same software as before. I find today's software/technology is going backwards. Applications are much more bulkyer and much more demanding on hardware, and hardware is slightly keeping up. All we're really doing now is moving a 2 ton vehicle using 800 horse power, instead of moving a 1/4 ton vehicle using 100 horse power.

I'm generally speaking here, not ALL software has gone bloated, but seems in general it has. Even Linux requires a fairly decent pc to run now.

I found when I stopped tweaking my machine and started actually using it, it was always more than fast enough for me.

take a look at your bank / credit card statement, sum up all the money you've spent on hardware, and realize that it can be much better utilized. i used to be like you till i realized that i kept upgrading for no reason, and none of the things i do on my pc really take adv. of my uber rig. (although probably not uber by your standards lol)

"being the fastest" is a money pit and for what, to load firefox 1 second faster?


another similar hobby that can lead to bleeding cash is home theater/audio / car stereo. just get something of decent quality up front and be satisfied with it, and whatever you do, DONT LISTEN TO ANYONE ELSE'S SYSTEM!!!! lol

Worst part is I have another intel mobo g33 or something like that, a thermaltake armor mx+, a 8800gt, a ocz 600w ps, 3gb 667ram, just lying around.

You're a moron if you really think it is a fair comparison between those two. Vista is not that bad. Look at the gaming benchmarks comparing vista and XP.

I bent the door a little on the thermaltake case and also bent a bar that was next to the power supply to cram power supply in. Its still in good shape though. The rest of the stuff is in excellent condition. I'm not even sure how to sell stuff. I haven't ever sold anything on a forum like this.

I tried overclocking for the first time ever about two years ago. My computer won't post ~65% of the time with my cpu clocked 10% past its stock speed. My 1950xt died with an aftermarket cooler on it, meaning no warranty replacement for me and /flush $130. I'm back to stock speeds. The improvement was negligible anyway, nothing I could even notice. And with how quickly fast computers become slow computers, it isn't really worth it to me to spend the premiums on fast ram, HSFs, etc. I'm perfectly happy with my last build at around $475 (recycled drives, case, lcd).

I used to be like you during university days. Always upgrading/tweaking/overclocking my computer and new parts coming/leaving almost every week. Currently, its been over 3 years since I have upgraded my computer and am fully satsified.

I am currently running a E6400 at stock speeds. The only upgrade I did over the last couple of years was 4GB ram and 8800gt video card ~2 yrs ago. Computer runs fine and fast enough for me for normal daily use. Only games I play now are COD and AA once in a while and dont see any need to upgrade soon.

Just got a HD camcorder, so once i start making encoding/decoding, might need to upgrade.
