What's wrong with leaving "security" issues to the states?

I've always wondered why a national PATRIOT Act was necessary. Is there something that the Federal Government can do relating to national security that the states couldn't do if they wished?

I don't think it's even necessary at the state level, but if the statists in New York want it, then they can have one for themselves.

Although the Feds giving control of the US Armed forces to the states wouldn't be a bad idea, that wasn't what I was talking about.

Fifty times as many people with access to highly classified info will improve security? Who will vet them?

There is a known problem exchanging intel between the federal agencies now, why not multiply the problem 50 fold?

Iowa should run the Navy? Kansas the Coast Guard? Colorado the amphibious Marine forces?
