What's worse, alcohol or cigarettes?

Cigarettes haven't ruined my life yet. Liquor already did that to me, and I can say I'm finally recooperated. Yes cigarettes are horrible on your body, but depended on the type. No, I'm not saying there are cigarettes that are good for you. If you smoke cigarettes with filters, you're inhaling about 500 more chemicals than you are anyway. (one including arsenic ) I know a guy who's been smoking Camel Non-Filters since he was 25, and he's 87 now. Needless to say he's doing better than a lot of 87 year-olds that didn't smoke. I have nightmares about the drunken situations I got into. Some people can keep it at a social level, and tell themselves they've had enough. Majority of acohol user cannot. More power to you if you can, but I would have to say it's the worst. I've almost killed myself (not suicide) numerous time just because of it. I almost want to move away from my town just because of all the people I know look down on me because of it. Anyways, if the poll had said "both" I would have chosen that, but in this case I have to strongly put alcohol.

Even when used in moderate amounts, the effects of cigarettes on the Human body, especially the lungs, are devastating. And then I'm not even talking about second-hand smoke yet.

A moderate amount of alcohol (say, one glass a day) is actually quite healthy.

So how do you explain Keith Richards? Granted he looks like a dessicated corpse, but that's from the heroin.

I can tell the respondents are young here. Alcohol is worse by far. We would be better off legalizing soft core drugs and making alcohol illegal. Whens the last time you heard " a smoking man, crashed head on into a family of 4 killing all.?" "A man under the influence of nicotine beat his wife, again." "Two men who were smoking, started fighting outside the ........." "There was a man with a cigarette running naked................" Alcohol is an evil poison used to kill pain. It destroys lives and families. I have counceled hundreds of people and not one said that smoking ruined there marriage/relationship, self esteem, dignity, etc.
Both of them will kill you, alcohol will help you kill other people. Wonder why its illegal to drink and drive but not to smoke and drive? Ok.......so would you rather face an on coming drunk driver at 2am or sit in a room with someone smoking?

sysadmin I thought this thread was about the effects of alcohol and cigarettes on the Human body and not how the behaviour of a person is influenced by them?

Who's this guy?

Anyway, the effects cigarettes have on the Human body are largely invisible, they're on the inside. For example, a certain type of cell on the inner walls of the lungs and trachea which are responsible for moving slime, which is produced by other types of cells in the same area and has as function keeping dust and other particles out of the lungs, are destroyed by substances in the smoke produced by burning a cigarette. Granted, these cells will return once the person stops smoking for a couple of years at least, but that's aside the point.

The alcohol from a single glass poses hardly a greater threat to the Human body than a glass of water, the alcohol actually helps to thin the blood, thereby reducing the risk on coagulations in the veins, which is the direct cause of heart-attacks and seizures

BTW, the people who say that alcohol is more dangerous than cigarettes are totally missing the point. This thread is about the moderate use of these substances. I would like to see someone get totally drunk after drinking a single glass of beer or wine.

Cigarettes...in the long term they can kill you. I think everyone here has the common sense of not drinking and driving but we like to get wasted. 😀

saying alcohol is the cause of accidents with drunk drivers or wifebeatings is just the same thing as saying guns are the cause of murder. those accidents happen because people act irresponsably, not because of the effects alcohol has on people.

a responsable drunk person will take a cab home, while an irresponsable equally drunk guy will drive home. Don't blame alcohol, blame irresponsability.

if you know alcohol has a bad effect on you, don't use it, it's like saying bashing on a wall with your head is unhealthy, and some people would insist on doing it. It's both moronic at best.

Aelus

I don't do either (I'm underage for both but wouldn't do them anyways)

Cigarettes are obviously worse, because they have a greater affect on everyone around the person who's smoking.

Alcohol, well, one person gets hammered and that's it (unless the go and do something stupid like driving 🙁)

<< Alcohol has ruined more families than any other drug ever will. Whoever voted for cigarettes is a moron. >>

You put it pretty subtle... moron 😀

Elledan you read way more into the question than I did. What's worse, alcohol or cigarettes? That was the question, right? I might not be downloading the entire page I guess........
I didnt see "what has the most adverse effects on the human body, the poison nicotine and the other 600 chemicals that are in it or the poison alcohol?"
Obviously I am not near as smart as you are, dont have near the life experience that you have, but................isnt poison ...............poison? What poison is worse? Is that the question? They both kill you, I guess that makes both of them just as bad? Would I rather be around a drunk or someone who smokes, I will take the smoker. If my daughter asked me, " Im either going to smoke or drink, which one dad?" I would rather have her smoke.
A moderate amount of alcohol (say, one glass a day) is actually quite healthy. Thats brilliant! You are telling me that a glass of poison a day is actually quite healthy? You better quit drinkin moron, your losing to many brain cells!

<< I don't do either (I'm underage for both but wouldn't do them anyways) >>

No, just because you don't do them now, doesn't mean you won't do them in the future 🙂
college is all about temptation and trap....sooner or later yo will fall into it, and if you don't..........YOU SUCK!😀

<< Equally bad. >>

Elaborate.
>>

Cigarettes kill both the smoker and those around him, those near him don't even have a choice in the matter. (And no, small kids don't get to move away from their parents when those smoke)

Alcohol removes barriers, and is the cause of a lot of violence and reckless behavior.

Forcing others to inhale your smoke and damage their lungs is bad.
Drunk driving and other behavior inspired by alcohol is dangerous to others and therefor bad.

Take away the cause and the problem is solved. Or take away those using it (mass murder seems a good way) and the problem is solved too.

Idiot. I'll drink if I want to, smoke if I want to, and your straight-edge whining crap isn't going to stop me.

Physically, cigarretes are much worse then alcohol. Mentally, however, alcohol can damage a person much more. Alcohol intoxicates you, and makes you do things you will most likely regret later. IMO, an average smoker would be in worse condition then an average drinker, but a cigerrete addict would be in a better condition then an alcohol addict. so DRINK RESPONSIBLY!! :|

This call isn't even close, it alcohol.

If youy ever watched someone kill themselves and hurt those around them, you would know why I feel this way.

The really bad thing about alcohol is you never know who will become a full-blown drunk until its too late.

smoking is worse for ME. drinking is worse for everyone else because then i become a danger to ALL. how many of you get into cars with someone who has been drinking????happens everyday.
