whats with this new trend of huge rims and a tiny bit of rubber

Yesterday on my evening drive home I saw 3 cars with similiar looks.

One was an metallic orange escalade that had huge rims (want to say bigger than 22) but it had a really thin set of tires. I mean, all you saw from the side was the rim, a white stripe which is about 1 inch (the sidewall) and thats it. It looks like its riding on rims.

second one was an old chevy impala that was running rims and tires that were more expensive than the engine and body it was riding on

third was a lincoln navigator...

Looks cool but honestly i am sure its handling sucks and ride quality is going to be the shit..

OP has his first taste of the donks. Just google donk (maybe NSFW?).

And yes, they ride like shit, but the guys spending more money on rims than the car itself, don't care.

I thought donk referred to that example above, like 30" wheels that requires a huge lift to fit them?

The trend I just shake my head at is a similar concept except they chop the springs and actually have the 1/4" worth of rubber tucked under the wheel well and the tire itself sort of "leans" in.

It literally looks retarded. By that I mean the car actually looks like it has downs syndrome or some other mental deficiency.

I just don't understand the appeal of it at all. VW's seem to be often abused in this manner.

Both of those are mild compared to some of the pictures where the slant of the tire is like 30 degrees from normal. I don't understand why people do stupid things to their cars. =(

Kinda like this?

In what bizzaro wold is that considered desirable? The rears don't even appear to match the front. What does that do the ride? I'd have to think the thing would wobble like an unbalanced clothes dryer.

Just google "excessive camber" and see the (apparently mostly Japanese) style of making your car look awful.

Nothing beats the Bosozoku style cars though. I actually kind of like them.

Donks have been around for a while, and stance is the new rice. What most of you guys are talking about are "stanced" cars.

idk, I'm not a hater of any of these fads/styles. To each his own. IHMO anyone loving cars in there own way, is cool by me. Even if I don't get it. (as long as its well done)

this is not a new trend. welcome to the 21st century.

Welcome to the 1990's is more like it.

Also those 'suicide lambo doors' are fucking hilarious.

I assumed OP was going to be talking about 'stretched' tires. That's somewhat newer, and mostly just a result of people realizing they can stick the wheels further out and/or lower a car more if the sidewall tapers inward.

Come to Houston. Cholo wannabes in lowered trucks on rubber band tires mixed with the wannabe asian thugs on herrafrush JDM supercamber cars mixed with wannabe rappers on donks. It really is a diverse city.
