What's with the "lives in parents' basement" image for gamers/nerds?

Seriously, I still often times see that around various forums.

Has it just become an Internet meme or expression by now?

How many people do you know of that actually live in their parents' basement? I know of no one.

All the adult nerdy/geeky types that I've known are all working professionals, rent/own their own place, and many with girlfriends and wives.

I think the image isn't so much for nerds/geeks, but for your typical "man child", you know, the hopeless slacker with no ambition....

I can't stand the term gamer. :p

Nerd/geek does not necessarily have to mean socially dysfunctional, but I do know several who are 25+ and will more than likely die alone.

Somebody find Trident's thread where he's crying over his new basement bedroom being smaller than his previous one.

It's phrase that refers to the insular personalities of many geeks/nerds. They are surrounded by the world but choose to hide/bury themselves in games and general nerd-dom both irl and online. For some it's actual interest, for many it's a way to gain status from other nerds while convincing themselves that status is transferable to the real world.

When I lived in Alaska I lived in an unfinished basement in my parents house. It was like an apartment, I had 3 couches, bed, computer desk, coffee table, tv, always had friends over. That was some 15 years ago, back then though, I was a lot different than I am now.

You're new here.
Stick around, follow the posters on here.
A full 95% of members here live with their parents.
They all make or comment on Home buying, 401Ks, Stock Market & investments, liquor, etc. just like adults, but sooner or later thay will make a post whining how their Mom won't let them do such & such.
Granted, not all of them live in a basement, per se, but they live with their parents (If their parents have a basement, that's where they'll live).
