Is it just me or are aliens that are light years above us in technology seem a little easy to kill in sci-fi shooters?

Like take Crysis or Mass Effect for example...you fight aliens that are thousands/millions of years superior to us in technology but we are able to simply kill them using guns...

A lot of people that believe in aliens (and even some reports from military and civilian first hand accounts) claim that they can take over our technology remotely, use mind control, use vastly superior flying machines (compare a UFO to modern jet)...yet a whole hoard of aliens fall to some guy in a suit packing a AK-47? I mean, I know its a game, and that might be the whole point...but wheres the game where your character instantly dies when 50ft from a alien due to your guys brain exploding? :p Obviously that wouldn't be a very fun game...but I just feel that our neighbors in the sky aren't getting the kind of credit they are due...

Um, some aliens in Mass Effect are harder to kill than others.
Also, if you find everyone is too easy to kill, increase the difficulty level.

Doesn't Mass Effect imply humans are much further along than we are now?

At any rate, the aliens never see the computer virus attack from the mac computer coming, because macs don't get viruses. So it all works out.

For a more serious answer, lets consider the bug analogy. An alien race could be so advanced that it perceives humans much as we perceive mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are ultimately insignificant but that doesn't mean they can't be annoying or deadly. If we wanted to we could certainly wipe out mosquitoes from existence, but why bother? They really aren't a threat.

As ridiculous as it is to portray aliens as being so relatively easily defeated, its just as ridiculous to portray the aliens caring about us at all and placing them as an antagonist in the first place.

Sorry I couldn't finish because I broke down in laughter after this part.

Aliens are bound by the laws of physics too. Damage is universal. Not to mention the aliens never fought us - even with weaker technology, humans are a mystery to them.

The aliens in Crysis do not have shields, just armor. The bigger ones are also just armored. Takes several missile hits to kill one - I'd say that's pretty tough. Not to mention Nomad and Psycho just own :D :p Can't beat that with any technology :p

But everyone in ME has basically the same level of technology, since they all pretty much stole it from what came before, so the main differences are physical and not technological. Humans have access to most of the same stuff as everyone else.
The physical differences are made apparent with bigger and badder aliens being harder to take down.

And your character is an elite with access to the best technology in the galaxy in both ME1 and ME2, so of course you're going to be superior to pretty much everyone else.

Crysis is different case, but in ME the aliens aren't light years ahead of us, except for the main villain aliens, and they just use local people to fight on their behalf anyway (in ME1).

I thought the aliens in Crysis were pretty tough...

hell, in most games it takes like half a mag or more to kill even a human. besides, there is no proof aliens exist and it is pure fiction so you can make your aliens however you want, so I don't understand your complaint.

As you and others have point out, what would be the point in playing a game where you couldn't win? That wouldn't be fun.

There's also no telling how well they bother equipping their soldiers. Due to political pressure their military budget could actually be very small, or they may place low value on the survivablity of their troops especially if they have plenty of manpower but not enough resources or manufacturing capability to equip them.

Or maybe their military is outfitted to fight non-human armies who use energy weapons so their shields/armor don't work as well against our guns. We're still repurposing our army to be more effective in urban warfare instead of the old Battle of the Bulge type warfare of WWII and Cold War and they could be in the same situation.

Perhaps their defense industries cut corners and supplied shoddy gear and back on their home planet there's a huge scandal unfolding about their troop losses due to weapons and shield underperforming or malfunctioning.

Or maybe they just don't have save game technology like humans in these games :)

I think it depends. Unless these aliens are composed of some kind of demi-god compounds that we've never seen before in our existence, then I think we're safe. Mind control is not real and not even realistically possible in a typical ideal way.

Ain't no fun if you get insta-gibbed.

because people bitch when a game is too hard and developers create AI for console gamers

In Mass Effect 2 your characters are gods and everything is easy to kill. Most games are like this.

Today's office worker is a wimp compared to the pioneers in the old west. Technology makes our lives softer and easier, not harder. The aliens have superior technology but grew up watching too much space-TV sitting on their asteroids.

Also, Alan Dean Foster and others have written books about a galaxy in which the older, high-tech races have much slower reaction times (think of them as evolved from sloths and turtles). They do fine against each other, but given equivalent weapons humans completely outclass them.

You answered your own question. If they were portrayed realistically there'd be no game; they'd nuke us from orbit, sick some kind of super plague on us etc.

+1

I've never heard of someone saying that aliens in computer games are too unrealistic. :D

Prediction is too nice a word. Ass-yanked-out-of-tin-foil-wrapped-fantasy is a better one.

Come on man. Haven't you seen Independence Day? Without shields a mid 80s fighter jet can take down "fighter jets" from aliens thousands of years ahead of us.

That's like a byplane taking down a raptor x 100.

And hey, a mid 90s Mac Computer can overcome the security systems of an entire mothership and then blow it the fuck up.
