A lot of Asians in general have this mentallity of more pay equals better in society. That is why there aren't many Asian artists, film directors, dancers; they are ostracized. It is pretty sad. I have a friend who is Asian and a film director and he complained on how his father ignores what he does now. It is sad because he is very, very talented. He actually got called up by the Disney Studios while he was in college, but his dad probably won't recognize even that because being a film director isn't respectable in asian society.
It is just the way their parents instill this value system. But I would have to say that this value system isn't just based in Asian culture, just emphasized. Any culture you go to, the rich and famous are the ones who are seen as better than the general population.
And although Asians tend to be thrifty and don't spend much, in my experience they tend to be the most generous when it comes to gifts. Asians tend to throw money to family and friends who generally need it. It is hilarious to watch family fight over who gets to pay for what (they fight to pay for it, not the other way around). It is part of the culture to take care of people close to them, but if you aren't close to them, you tend to get the shaft.
Sidenote though: I generally find that the people who spend the time to complain about this issue, tend to not have money, and when they finally get money, they act the same way. If they didn't think money was really important, then it wouldn't bother them when pricks act that way.
