I don't mind it since my screen is large enough that it's going to be huge no matter what aspect ratio it is. I have my masking system to avoid the "black bars" distraction, so I'm happy.
What does bother me is when I go to an actual movie theater and they've fvcked up their own masking system and I can see the movie is not matching up with the actual screen. One of the last times I went to see a movie (a rare occasion now), the left side of the image was a full 6-8 feet farther than the screen went, which was really distracting
for theaters, just go ask any employee to get that fixed. At the theater I worked at, some screens would have more than one film showing, depending on the show time (4pm show would be one movie, the 7pm show could be a different movie), and due to that, sometimes the booth manager would forget to change the projector setup. So, a movie could look completely screwed up. If someone approached me, all I had to do was call over the radio to the manager and it would get fixed.

of course, it was kind of funny because all of our screens, the movie image would actually reach maybe an inch above and below, and sometimes that bottom inch or two would show what was at the top of the frame previously. nobody ever noticed, but I thought it would be a little distracting.
